3 year old's behaviour

Please can anyone help as I am at my wits end.

My 3 year old (4 in Jan)is constantly saying things which are rude, nasty, uncalled for. For eg, if someone sings a song he will repeat it but changing the words to something rude, or just saying 'nasty' or 'stupid'. Or if someone says that something is nice or cute he'll say 'no it's not it's stupid'.

I feel like I have tried everything in an attempt to stop him doing this but all he says is that he can't control himself. This in itself worries me.

Does anyone have any idea/tips on how to deal with this as it has now been going on for months maybe even a year.

Is it normal or should I be seeking some professional advice? It has got to the stage that I don't want to take him out as I am anxious about what he is going to say, or how he is going to react to other people.

Thanks!

DS 'rewrites' most songs to involve

a) poo
b) pooing in one's own knickers
c) punching yourself in the face
d) dying

We say 'that's not a very nice thing to say. I thought you were a nice boy' (he can't answer back 'no I'm nasty & stupid)

I think it's something most small boys do

I second saying, "I thought you were a nice boy? That wasn't very nice.".

Replacing the lyrics of songs is normal. It'll stop, although he'll probably be 17!

I wouldn't worry - most people expect small boys to say things like that.

Are you encouraging it by being overly anxious/giving him lots of attention for doing it?

I am not sure that this is particularly abnormal.

DS (3) has been singing:

"Little Donkey
Little Donkey
On the POO POO"

I asked him who sang the song like that and he named a boy in his class. I am certain my DS didn't make it up as he is not at that stage yet - he just does exactly as the teacher (or other pupils!) tell him. I am sure many of his class are now repeating the same verse!

both my DSs regularly do this. Poo is their favourite word (they are 5 and 3.4). Ging gang goolies is their favourite phrase. Both regularly get worked into all songs, anything that can possibly reference a poo or a willie will replace words in almost every sentence. Tiresome, but totally normal, annoying boy behaviour. DH thinks it's hilarious.

Thanks for your posts. I'm just concerned because he says it in such a 'nasty' way if you know what I mean and can say such horrible things to other children.
