2 1/2year 'development check' - what's the deal?

I have had a letter saying a community nursery nurse is coming to visit to do DS1's 'development' check in January. Does everyone have this, and what will she be checking for?

TIA

oh DS3 had his the other day

basically "do you have any concerns about his development"

gave him a few toys (jigsaw, wooden building blocks) to play with while we chatted.

Showed him a few pictures in a book and asked him what they were/what noise they made

Weighed and measured him (well roughly as he wasn't very co-operative at that point) and that was it.

I only went along to find out how much he weighed and how tall he was

It is looking at developmental milestones. Just a basic look at language, motor skills, hearing etc. It is standard and offered routinely.

But FWIW she isn't "coming" unless you accept the appointemnt. ALL such appointments are voluntary.
They are useful if you want somone to just check all is well but I never had any with DD as she was fine.

thanks both

The letter gives a phone number if the time/date is not 'suitable'. As it happens it's fine but on the other hand I'm not remotely concerned about DS1 from a physical or behavioural/development point of view so it will probably be a waste of time. Neither am I especially keen to find out how tall he is/how much he weighs - I can do both at home anyway.

Hmm. Maybe I'll cancel. Not sure.

ahhh you see I can't get DS3 to stand still long enough to measure him properly, and the batteries in my scales had gone

IdrisTheRedNosedDragon · 17/12/2009 13:41

I didn't get one for DS or DD. Nearly had one for DS but then it appeared health authority ran out of money as they wrote again saying it was cancelled and if we had any concerns to let them know.

DD had 8 month check and that was it. She appears OK at 4.2

Ah you see when I said 'I can always do that at home', that was purely a hypothetical statement Awassailing. It's entirely possible if I attempted any such thing that I would also be unable to keep DS1 still and indeed there are no batteries in my scales! But in theory I could...
