I have a four week old who has just been diagnosed with a floppy layrynx. his breathing is very loud and mucousy and while the doctor doesn't seem bothered and says he will grow out of it i have got myself into a state by googling and reading some rather alarming things. has anyone else had their babies diagnosed with this? if so, can you shed a little more light and hopefully reassure me that my gorgeous little boy is not going to go blue and stop breathing on me??!!!?

I hope you take this message in the way I intended...

I'm afraid I can't help with floppy larynx - although if the doctor isn't too worried, it sounds hopeful that it'll go away, although who knows when! However, if you have read up about it and are worried that there may be a blue episode, may I suggest that you obtain basic first aid training - particularly aimed at babies? When DD left SCBU (3 months prem, impatient little madam!) we were offered (and took) emergency first aid training.

I'm NOT saying it'll happen, and I sincerely hope it doesn't, but it would at least reassure you that you know what to do.

Just came across your post and wanted to offer reassurance. My daughter was diagnosed with a floppy larynx when she was born and although she coughed a lot (this was due to a coughing type asthma and not the floppy larynx) she sounded like a sealion bless her. I was worried also and was told in the hospital that she'd outgrow this by about the age of 2 - and they were right! She's now 10 and her floppy larynx didn't cause her any problems. Just wanted to let you know this!
