DS 1 walked at 13 months so kind of expected DS 2 to do the same. He's a demon crawler and trucks round the flat pushing carts and the like but everytime I try to encourage him to take an idependant, even 'one hand supported' step he just sits down and starts crawling. I know his legs are strong enough but he just doesn't seem to have the courage or be arsed.

I'm normally laid back about this sort of thing but I'm starting to panic now as I live in a 2nd floor flat with no lift, already have a thankfully walking three year old who still needs some assistance up and down the stairs and another baby coming in three months. The carrying up the stairs of 16 month old whilst holding toddlers hand at snails pace is currently killing me and it occurred to me tonight that if I end up with another emergency section I will literally be flatbound for 6 weeks if fat bubs doesn't get off his arse soon and start walking.

Housebound in a flat with three under 4's doesn't sound appealing. Please give me some hope that it will happen.......

jojochanel are you me??? DS2 (also 16 months) is in exctly this same position, except he's never crawled either - only bottom shuffled, but like your DS1, mine crawled about 9 months, then walked at 13 months - and I assumed DS2 would be the same...no advice I'm afraid, but you're certainly not on your own. Good luck with no 3!

Tizzyjacko · 14/12/2009 21:35

Well he will walk sometime but I had DS1 13 months, DS2 (bottom shuffled rather than crawled 18 months, DS3 (crawled)20 months!!!! Sorry!

I can perhaps uniquely boast that my third is one of the few who walked and potty trained in the same week.

If its any consolation both my late ones had caught up with their early waling peers in a matter of months.

Can your 16 month old crawl up the stairs? i know he'll get a bit grubby but may save your back?

Tizzyjacko · 14/12/2009 21:36

Waling peers? I mean walking.....

paisleyleaf · 14/12/2009 21:43

My DD was 18-19 mths before she started walking. But when she did, she was really good at it, no falling.

justbeme · 14/12/2009 21:43

My friends little boy has started walking at 2 - he was just lazy!! So there is hope!

ilove · 14/12/2009 21:45

My eldest, and my DD! both shuffled. Eldest walked at 26 months, DD! at a fortnight before her second birthday, the same week as DS3 walked and he was 9 months younger than her!

jojochanel · 14/12/2009 21:46

Tizzyjacko -LOL - pottytrained and walking in the same week - that's amazing! Do you thing it's a boy thing that each one gets progressively lazier? Hope not as DC3 is probs another boy. DS1 was saying words by now too and DS2 isn't that arsed about speaking either.

He can make it up the stairs faster than the 3 year old on his hands and knees and we may have to resort to that but not sure about the getting down as we haven't tried that yet. It's an old Edinburgh victorian flat though and the stairwells here are quite minging. Know a lady who literally gave birth at the bottom of hers though 6 months ago and they're all ok...

If he's been crawling that long he probably has an amazing immune system anyway! my third spent so long on the floor he really seemed to think he was one of the dogs, drinking their water and even taking a bone to chew (gross i know!). But he was never sick and even now is incredibly healthy. The hygiene hypothesis is a wonderful theory for slatterns like me.

Getting down is easy to teach. Turn him round at the top and encourage him to reverse down. as long as you are below him its perfectly safe and a good skill for him to learn.

jojochanel · 14/12/2009 21:55

Tizzyjacko - all I can say is thank god my cats died last year whilst he was still in utero as he likes his food (hence the fat bubs bit)....

DD walked at about 22 months- lazy and chubby too! (I also had another baby when she wasn't walking- it was fine as just carried them both but see that that might not be possible with a C-S)

jojochanel · 14/12/2009 22:03

Ladies I'm looking for some hope here...

Only one of my LO's walked at the 12 month mark, the rest were between 14 - 18 months. It is a worry when yoou have a LO who takes their time to walk, but such is our lot as parents, we are programmed to worry all the time. When he is walking you will find another thing to worry about!

BrianGiggs · 14/12/2009 22:10

wtf is a BUBS

madamefreckle · 14/12/2009 22:11

My nephew took until 20 months to walk- and never crawled - but is really sporty now aged 5.

Ivykaty44 · 14/12/2009 22:12

I had similar - dd1 wlaked one week after her first birthday and I expected the same with dd2 - nothing at all, now even a crawl at 17 months and then one day she just walked by the time she was 18 months, taddar

jojochanel · 14/12/2009 22:15

he went from 'baby' to 'babs' to 'babsey' to 'bubsey' to 'fat bubs'..just kind of stuck. his brother is also known as 'pickle' cos he did nowt but cry for the first 12 weeks

BrianGiggs · 14/12/2009 22:15

id call him pain in the arse, not pickle for that.

jojochanel · 14/12/2009 22:24

turns out the crying was just cos he couldn't talk. Once he started that it all got much better. He still gets stroppy now and then though - unlike his brother who just can't be asred and just sits on his bum grinning like the village idiot. I love them dearly though

Apparently stocky babies walk later especially if they're really good at crawling. Harder to balance and less incentive.

My ds is 15mo and just starting to take a few steps towards things without dropping to crawling. His skinny cousins walked at 11mo without really bothering to crawl.

LentilsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 15/12/2009 00:53

I did this to my mum when she was expecting no. 3 and I wouldn't give up on bum-shuffling.

She holds a grudge 37 years later.
