Sexist toys

I have no idea where to post this so I'm going for here. I am trying to find some 'girl lego' that my niece has asked for and I am shocked by how boy-oriented lego is. The only girl stuff I have seen is either really expensive for what it is or for younger girls (and in a pink box - why is everything for girls pink??????? It's just insulting!)

She loves playing with lego as she is logical and intelligent and enjoys creating things, and I was hoping to find something that would appeal to her without being majorly girly or too young for her. I really feel toys these days reinforce gender stereotypes and I feel suddenly annoyed about it enough to post this.

What do you find about the normal lego so boy like though? My dd has the the big red box, and its just primary colours.

you're mad the best thing about lego is that it isnt all prissy!

just buy her ordinary lego, its unisex!

oh and here is a recent thread with similar op who found lots of fun stuff in the end:

thats prob more helpful than my first post

I always thought lego wher both gender friendly until they came out with the pink stuff. The only thing I could find that is girly withi=out being pink is that quite expensive though

Dd (4.5) is very pinkyigirl but uses ordinary lego - she's getting a big box of it for Xmas. There are pieces that go to make people, animals and houses. Some of the kits are very oriented towards planes and vehicles, which dd is not so keen on. But there is plenty of other stuff. I would NOT buy pink lego though - I rather like the fact that it's not too girly - the only non uber-girly toy dd plays with.

I would just get her another ordinary lego kit.

I wanted to find some girl minifig sets really. They don't have to be girly, just not all boys, or sets of boys with one girl, not just have a pink box of lego (the one I saw has no minifigs, just mostly pink bricks in a pink box).

While I agree the lego bricks are good as gender friendly and my niece certainly doesn't care that much what colour it is and is mad about it, most of the accessories in the shops at the moment (i have looked on lego, whsmith, amazon, toys r us) seem to be geared up to boys.

I'll have a look on that thread, but without paying over the odds for collector vintage girl minifigs on ebay I am finding the search quite frustrating. Thanks for the comments though!

you want girl lego people (thats what minifigs are?) you just buy ponytails that go on boy lego people i think......will search but i have only seen boxes of hair in lego shop tbh

littleducks · 11/12/2009 10:57

example of hair

I've just had a look through that thread. It's all stuff I've seen or discarded. Without wanting overly girly stuff, I'm afraid that I do find lego accessories too boy-oriented and toys in general really sexist.

That's a good idea, as mentioned there are also some girl lego people on ebay. I still think there should be more on the lego site!!!

Thanks for your help
