4/5 yr olds and bedtime milk

my 4.6 yr old still has a beaker of milk at bedtime and am wondering whether it's about time i should wean him off it.

in fact, he also has a pre-brekkie beaker in the morning too.

was just wondering whether anyone still does this with their dcs of a similar age...

my ds is not yet dry at night, so think this storytime milk is one thing to cut out in order to encourage a dry night.

thoughts please

I would cut it out

I wouldnt worry, my 3 yr old still has a bottle beaker of milk too. Its the only way she will sleep!

My DS is nearly 5. We stopped the bedtime milk about 3 months ago and it made no difference to his dryness at night. So I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. We weaned them both off by having the milk downstairs before going up for bath and bed and now they just don't ask for it. That said they still have a half beaker in the morning pre-brekkie. I can't see the harm really.

My 5 year old still has milk before bed. I didn't realise it was unusual.

missmama · 10/12/2009 19:58

My 11 and 9 Y olds still have milk before bed.
Why on earth would you want to stop giving it to them.

DS is 5.5 and hasn't had bedtime milk in years. He does drink alot of milk during the day but it isn't part of his bedtime routine.

He has also been dry at night for a long time but I don't know if there is any correlation.

morethanyoubargainfor · 10/12/2009 20:14

my ds 7 stills has milk at bedtime. he did eventually drop his beaker about 8 months ago. (only used a beaker at bedtime).

droping his nighttime drink is NOT an option he wouldn't settle.

My DS drinks lots of milk still - he will only drink milk or water, can't see why you would want to stop him having milk. If bedtime wetting is an issue, just give him small cups after 4pm when asked for.

My ds1 is 4.1 and still has a small glass of milk at bedtime. We're trying to get him to have it a bit earlier and have a wee before bed, because he's not dry at night either, but tbh I usually forget and then give it to him at bedtime anyway. I only give them a tiny amount really because they often don't drink it all anyway - it's more of a comfort thing I think.

Washersaurus · 10/12/2009 20:39

DS1 who is 4yo still has a beaker of milk after his dinner in the evening and after breakfast in the morning, mainly because 2yo DS2 only drinks milk at these times.

We tried cutting out the bedtime milk with DS1 temporarily and it made no difference to how wet he was overnight.

It is part of the winding down before bath routine here so no reason to put a stop to it.

I had huge bed wetting problems when I was young and, embarrassingly into my teens. No matter how little I had to drink made no diference, so if that is the only reason for stopping I wouldn't bother.
