DS is 7 months, and is having real issues with solids. Anything on a spoon he pushes straight out again with his tongue, though if I hold a banana/piece of tangerine he sucks on it. He will also hold a rice cake and gum it certain death.

I had the HV come and see him last week, because I was concerned that he's still barely eating any food, and she has now suggested that he has problems with coordination, and that his small motor skill are not right for his age.

So, he's rolling (has been for 3 months), can nearly sit unsupported, babbling 'da-da-da', can support some weight on his little legs, and laughing and smiling all day long. He gets upset if he drops a toys/if I leave the room to go to the loo/kitchen etc and leave him in his chair. In terms of coordination, though, he will make a grab for a toy on his high-chair tray etc, or reach out for something in my hand, but it's not very precise, and he's certainly not passing a toy from one hand to the other, using a pincer grasp etc.

So, what can your 7 months old do? I am beside myself with worry, and don't even know what ths may be a sign of.

Thanks

Sounds exactly like my DS. He's 7.5 months and for weeks I tried to feed his purees with a spoon, wouldn't take anything else than mashed banana and I probably just put him off, feeling more and more frustrated. Someone pointed out it's important to let the baby feel and play with the food and I realised that he loves making a mess (of course!)and will eat as long as he's mostly feeding himself. Now I give him cooked vegetables to chew on, boiled eggs, Organix finger foods he loves and toast dipped in pureed food.
He manages to move about and handle things as much as your DS, I wouldn't think any more was expected at this age.

Please don't worry - he sounds perfectly normal to me.

My DD didn't roll at all, sat up at 7/8 months, never crawled and didn't walk until she was 20 months. And she's perfect, and always was - don't waste precious time worrying like I did .

DD2 didn't sit until over 7 months, but started crawling just before 9 months so it was quite a rapid progression!

If he's pushing the spoon out, why not take it as a sign and try baby-led weaning? I spoon fed DD1 and can't believe what a faff it was so am going to try BLW with DD2 (currently only 4 months).

He sounds fine - ignore the HV.

Thank you all so much for being so reassuring.

I saw the GP today at baby clinic, and she had a really good look at DS, and has really put my mind at rest. She said that the food thing is really not an issue- as long as he's still happily BFing, I should just carry on with that. As for his coordination, she said he IS doing the things he should be at this age, and that the milestone lists are ridiculous.

Wish I'd seen her sooner!
