Does your 3 year old listen to you?

DD is 3 and I am bored of the sound of my own voice telling her over and over and over and over again to do simple things (put shoes on, wash hands, hang up coat, get off baby brother......)

Is there a knack I am missing? Is this normal?

I am driving myself mad!

normal.

The thread title made me lol!

Short answer?

No! He's 3.

nickytwotimes · 07/12/2009 19:07

SOunds normal to me.
I've tried different tones of voice, etc, but it is a nightmare.

WobblyPig · 07/12/2009 19:12

Short answer No.
Longer answer :I then say: Stop, standstill and open your ears, at which point DS eventually stops what he is doing ; faces me and pulls both ears out. This is the only way I can get him to even pretend ot listen to me. He may end up with unfeasibly large ears but at least I may get him to do 10% of the things I ask.

normal in this house! I too am sick of the sound of my voice, particularly at the table - roll your sleeves up, don't lean in your food, don't wave food about, mind your drink etc etc.

thighsmadeofcheddar · 07/12/2009 19:14

No.

But she listens when I say Father Christmas can see her. Then immediately does whatever I've requested. I'll be buggered in January though.

canihaveapeeinpeacepleasebob · 07/12/2009 19:15

ds1 has just turned 4 and still doesn't listen.
Some days I think the the words aren't acually coming out of my mouth and that I'm just hearing them in my head
He says he can't hear me as he has a potato in one ear and some sweet corn in the other, because thats what the doctor told him when he looked in his ears! (Thanks doc)

Oh so there is no hope but at least it isn't just me.

I find it so infuriating and then I end up shouting, which doesn't help either. Or threatening - do X right now or I will/won't do blah, blah, blah.

'tis very draining though - especially when I can't think of a suitable threat/bribe!

Well, this time of year is a gift on that front, as thighsmadeofcheddar says. Threatening no presents results in some compliance.

I am also going to start eating all ds2's chocolate, as it has a very unpleasant effect on his behaviour (never noticeable in dd or ds1).

mumswobblybits · 07/12/2009 22:20

I have this too. I stand there saying do you want a drink, do you want a drink, do you want a drink...... no answer. I then give up and walk away and DS will finally answer. I'm sure he has selective hearing. Oh the joys.. it drives you mad doesn't it ?
