he acts really huffily when people he knows speak to him, ask him questions etc, really embarassing when it happens.

Today it was nursery teachers and friends that he knows well and yet he refused point blank to even say hello, hiding behind my back.

At first I thought it was just shyness and his age but he seems to know exactly what he's doing and doesn't seem to be getting any better doing it more and more, is this normal and how do you deal with it?

Mine aren't like it but I know lots of DC that are

Quite normal in pre-schoolers IMO

I think it is shyness, but they don't 'get' or understand that they feel shy so it comes across differently to adults, IYKWIM

My dd3 does this, its pretty normal according to nursery staff. If they get tired/shy they dont have the development to be polite they just blank you or get huffy.

I really don't think that age group have the neurological development to understand adult notions of manners. It is incredibly common and really not worth worrying about. I never try to make kids answer my questions. If they are unreceptive to me I leave them alone and think nothing of it.

Thank you, I thought it would be fairly common, it's just frustrating when you see other children being polite and friendly and mine saying 'no' and hiding behind me. I am however 6mths preg and probably a bit hormonal and over-emotional!
