Baby boy, 17 weeks now but has been "standing" since less than 12 weeks old. Obviously not really standing, but he tenses his legs in a standing position and is happy to stand supported on the sofa or on a lap, or leaning against a body, for a relatively long time. ie a couple of minutes.

Should we encourage this? Is it going to damage his leg muscles, spine or anything?

DS was the same, standing from weeks old stood up properly at 8 months and ran from 10 months, didn't really do walking, too slow.
Is 10 now and still on his feet almost all the time.

By comparison DD2 would not stand supported until about 8-9 months old and she is still not walking at 15 months

I don't really see how you can stopt hem tbh. When Ds was very small he would pull himslef up, it was very difficult to sit him down. And as above poster, he was running at 10 months!

Wouldn't worry, dd2 (6 months) is and was exactly the same - they've got to get those muscles and tendons strong somehow

The only thing you shouldn't do (I am told) is leave them in a baby bouncer or one of those baby seats on wheels - as they push them selves about on tiptoe and it can shorten the achilles tendon which then makes it a bit more difficult when they do come to be ready to walk properly.

Well my DS has always had strong legs. My mum also gave me the 'you shouldn't let him do that he'll get bandy legs' line. HV said he wouldn't have done it if his legs couldn't handle it.

Agree with all the above (although did skim read!)

DS was 'standing' as soon as he found his legs, and was walking at 7.5mths. People used to stare with wonder at him toddling about as he was/is a tiny thing!

I also got told by my Nan he would get 'bandy legs' in a half jokey way. Errr, nope. No problems there!
