DD pulling her hair out

DD 2.4 has started pulling her hair out. She rakes her hands through her hair hard enough to pull out a few strands at a time but not yanking it out if you see what I mean.

She seems to think its really funny when I tell her off. She quite often eats the hair as well! When I went into her room this morning her mattress is covered in hair.

She'll usually stop straight away if I catch her at it but can't obviously watch her 24/7 and it appears to mainly be an issue at night or when she wakes up in the morning before we get her up.

Any suggestions?

Sorry no suggestions but my DS went through a brief phase of this at about 2.1, only when he was tired/frustrated though and his was more of a yanking

MrsAlwaysRight · 06/12/2009 13:26

Thanks TheLemur. Hoping it is just another phase that will stop of its own accord!

Sorry not much help but my dd has done the same thing ever since she had hair, but usually when tired. This is mainly a comfort thing but she can also yank in a tantrum. I watch her fingering her hair when asleep.
This may sound weird but I made her a 'hair thing' which was some hair extensions, internet great for these, glued round a honey stick (looked better than it sounds, if slightly voodoo'ish') and she loves to use this. She can hold with one hand and pull through with the other so has the same feel as the hair on her head.
Not much help if doing all day but at least may help when tired?

Thanks for the suggestion Hildabeast. Possible a silly question but what is a honey stick?

it is a wooden stick with ridges at the bottom instad of a spoon. A small wooden spoon would do just as well - could have drawn it but.......

I do this I have bald patches... I can't help myself and it's much worse when I'm stressed or tired.

Is she enjoying the texture; is her hair really smooth and silky, can you get her a fluffy cat to stroke!
