My DS is coming up to three months old and is drooling constantly, please tell me he isn't teething already? no sign of a temperature but he is getting more fractious, am hopeful this is temporary. Any ideas?
thanks

Could be the beginning of teething. My DS (now 5.5 months) began drooling like that at about 12 weeks. Still no sign of any actual teeth, though!

All babies begin drooling around this time, people mention teething but I just think it's developmental. This is also the time babies start to grab, hold and put in their mouths - again not a sign of teething imo

My DS1 started with a red cheek and drooling at dead on 3 months. First tooth appeared at 4 months, so could easily be teething. He lived in a bid for about a year because he was such a dribbler .

(DS2 never drooled when teething - had non-stop snotty nose instead ....)

A bib, not a bid (der, must spellcheck)

Jamieandhismagictorch · 02/12/2009 18:38

teething at this age is a bit of a sod, because they can't easily get relief by holding and chewing on things, and teething gels don't necessarily help if pain is not from the tooth coming through the gum, but moving down through the bone.

Is it still OK to give Calpol at 3 months ? (I'm behind the times)

Tee2072 · 02/12/2009 19:54

Yes it is Jamie. Calpol's about all that's left that's okay to give!

Definately sounds like teething. My DS1 was drooling at 5 weeks and GP implied I was being ridiculous for suggesting he was teething. By 12 weeks his 2 top teeth had come all the way through! My 3 DS's have all had at least 2 teeth by 4 months, so I would say it's very likely. However, they can drool for weeks before the tooth shows itself. DS3 got a lot of relief from chewing on muslin squares (as couldn't hold teething rings etc as was too little).

My son's been dribbling since this age, is now 6.5 months and still no teeth! He's just a dribbly boy and needs a bib on constantly.

YanknChristmasCrackers · 06/12/2009 21:03

I read somewhere that around 2 months old is when their salivary glands develop enough to start dribbling, so has nothing to do with teething at this age. FWIW, my 3 month old is doing the exact same thing, as are the babies I know from my NCT group who are 5 months, and no teeth turning up for any of us!

My DD got her first tooth at 10 weeks!!!

She has loads now (she's 4.5 months) and drools constantly!!! She's worse than my chocolate labrador!!

suiledonne · 07/12/2009 12:41

My dd2 had 2 teeth at 12 weeks old so teething is a possibility.

YanknChristmasCrackers · 07/12/2009 14:54

Yes, meant to say, teething is a possibility, but not the likeliest explanation. I know some do get them early, but most of the time at that age drooling is just drooling!

I found these pricey, but useful.

I like to think they are what John Wayne might have worn were he prone to dribbling...
