DS has been counting to 10 for a while and can count to 20 now, but has no concept that these number relate to the amount of something. He just repeats the order like it's a nursery rhyme.

Not sure when they are supposed to understand the concept of 'amounts' but there are plenty at the junior school DH works in who can't do that in year 1, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Gracie123 · 02/12/2009 11:41

p.s. just realised I didn't mention DS is age

he's nearly 2.

Portofino · 02/12/2009 11:52

My dd would count her way up the stairs at about 20 months, but like Gracie says I think it was the words she remembered rather the concept of numbers. Before we moved to Belgium (she was 2) we taught her in French too (PFB )

LastTrainToNowhere · 02/12/2009 11:56

My dd started counting properly (rather than reciting the numbers) at around 2.5 years. She's now nearly three and counts up to 20

StealthPolarBear · 02/12/2009 11:57

at just over 2 he could recite the numbers, he's now 2 1/2 and can recite up to abt 11 or 12. can count up to 5 or 6

MarthaFarquhar · 02/12/2009 11:58

DD could parrot 1-15 at about 20 months. She is now 2.9 and can count to five with a sense of what 5 represents IYSWIM.

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 02/12/2009 12:18

thanks all for replying. DS has been saying 2-3-2-3-7 and kind of pointing towards his toys as if he's counting them, so I think he gets that numbers relate to quantity IYSWIM - can't get them in order yet though

my ds is 2. He can say 2, 2, 2 , 2 whilst pointing out there is more than 1 of something. He saw the letter S and said 2 t'other day

doesn't really attempt to parrot any sequence of numbers tho

BornToFolk · 02/12/2009 12:22

DS is 2.1 and can recite numbers. Sometimes he even gets them in the right order!

He sometimes looks like he's counting, e.g. pointing at three things in turn saying "1, 2, 3" but he's just as likely to point to them all again and carry on with "4,5,6" etc.

I know he understands the concept of "lots". There were three dummies next to his bed and he pointed and said "lots of dummies". I think that he thinks in terms of "1, 2, lots" at the moment!

MsDoctor · 02/12/2009 12:24

MY dd could count to 10 at under two, in two languages (we are not bilingual). At 2.3 she could count to 20.

Meglet · 02/12/2009 12:29

DS is 3 and has been couting to 10 for quite some time. He can count a small number of objects if I ask him how many cars / beakers / books are in front of him. He sometimes makes it past 20, but it's quite hit and miss.

I don't think he recognises any by sight though.

Counting or reciting numbers in order? Reciting numbers in order is like learning to sing "Head, shoulders, knees and toes" or similar.
Mine learnt to recite numbers at around 2.

laurielee · 02/12/2009 12:48

At about 22 months my DS could count to 14. He hasn't progressed beyond 14 since, although I think he is just starting to 'understand' counting as he will sometimes point to 2 or 3 objects and say '2 cups' or '3 rabbits'. He is 2.2 now.

Like Borntofolk's DS he is just as likely to just carry on counting things, even if they are not there!

thehairybabysmum · 02/12/2009 13:19

My DS, just 2 can count up the stairs but agree it is more a parrot thing. I think, as yours does he has a vague idea that no.s relate to quntity.

He is ds2 and ds1 likes counting things etc so think he copies and this has helped him to understand more.

DS1 is 4 next week and defo 'gets' numbers and quantities he can do some basic addition/subtraction of no.s less than 10.
