Handedness

DS 3.1 still doesn't seem to have developed handedness for writing /drawing etc. He doesn't hold a pen/crayon properly in either hand and therefore does't appear comfortable with either and frequently switches between the two until giving up. He seems really reluctant to do anything that involves a drawing implement and I wonder whehter he is truely confused re: handedness.

Has anyone experienced this or know how I could encourage him to draw/write with either habd?

AFAIK it's normal to show no particular preferance for either hand at this age. That will develop later.

But as far as his general discomfort with holding a crayon, I don't know what to suggest. Maybe do finger painting for a while so he gets used to movements involved before trying a paint brush, then crayons again later?

Neither of my children showed a great preference for hand use. My ds could barely hold a pen properly before he started school last year. He would often switch from right to left hand although seems pretty much right handed now. My dd is 2.5 years and the same - uses both hands equally but also struggles with pen hold because her grip is a bit tight.

Apparently playing games with clothes pegs helps strengthen grip for writing!
