i have a 2 week old who has started being very colicky and i hate seeing him in pain
So - in your opinion/experience, what is the most successful remedy for colic,

Which of the numerous types of drops etc from the chemist should i fork out for

or would you recommend other options as being more effective?

Infacol worked for my DD. Didn't really try anything else.

We tried Infacol too, but it has't really worked for DS (now 6 weeks and 2 days). We also thought we'd give Colief a try, but it's a bit of a palaver mixing it with a little expressed milk and feeding it on a spoon before each feed, and I had a meltdown because I struggled to hand express enough to do the mixing in the middle of the night. No good if you're already at the end of your tether and knackered. Also Colief is pricey. It might be easier to use if you are bottle feeding.

Finally we are trying less stimulation in the evening. When DS lights up we take him to a darkened, quiet room (usually the bedroom) and just hold him for comfort, no rocking or patting, which seems to help a bit.

I have a horrible feeling that the only real cure is going to be time. DS, DH and I will just have to ride it out until that tiny digestive system matures a bit. Poor little babe. It turns me inside out listening to him (DS that is, not DH... obviously).

I am going to look into cranial osteopathy though. I've heard mixed reports of its effectiveness, so I guess it depends on what's causing the colic. DS had a ventuse delivery so that might be a factor. Anything's worth a try though, right?!

Very best of luck with finding the best help for your DS.

Oh, also meant to say: no help to baby but two great tips I read on here for surviving the screaming were ear plugs and putting the subtitles on on the telly! At least you might preserve your frayed nerves!

i tried infacol but it never made any difference. i eventually ended up using colief which definately worked. it took about a week to see the effect. i also changed my bottles to dr browns which were also brilliant. i

Gripe water helped with my DD and more so with my Ds but his was less severe.

Oblomov · 01/12/2009 20:17

difficult to advise. none worked for us, colief, infacol, gripe, cranial. some do for some. 12 weeks can seem like a very very long time, but please remmeber , it will get better

Gripe water was good, and if you are FF, we found cartons (as opposed to powder and water) upset our DS.

Montifer · 01/12/2009 20:23

We used Infacol, not sure how much it helped; DS burped a bit more and we felt we were doing something.

We found the Tiger in a Tree hold (lying tummy down on your forearm) helped more than anything else.

If we'd known about Dr Karp we'd definitely have given his technique a go.

It is a phase and will pass, if it's any consolation DS (17 months) cried most his waking time for the 1st 14 weeks and hardly ever cries now.

Good luck
