14 month old can't get herself into sitting

My very happy 14 month old dd can cruise furniture, walk along pushing her trolley, pull up on certain things (though not on everything) but she cannot get from lying down into a sitting position. I've tried showing her how to do it by turning her onto her side and then pushing down on her arms but she doesn't seem to have the strength.
Is this ok, do you think? Should I be worried? When did your dc learn this skill?
It probably makes a difference that she's a bottom shuffler, cannot crawl.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. My ds is nearly 13 months and can't roll over from his back which means he can't sit himself up either. I think it just hasn't really occurred to him to try and figure out how to do it. Also as your dd is doing lots of other stuff in terms of moving around I'm sure it's nothing.

Crawling helps develop upper body strength and depth perception so children who don't crawl may have trouble saving themselves when they fall over. Some physio might help herthey will teach you exercises to do at homeor a gymboree class might be good.

It's nothing to worry about in the grand scheme of her development (she sounds lovely!) but there are definitely things you can do to help her along.

DD2 (16mo) had to be shown how to crawl, push up to sitting, pull up, cruise etc. She's a bum shuffler and has some muscle tone and joint issues but physio has helped her along tremendously! She's close to walking now and we've been signed out of physio for the time being.

Like pp said, it could be down to not crawling and therefore developing her trunk and upper body strength yet. My dd struggled to get into sitting until she started crawling at about 15 months - she has weak trunk muscles. At 2.5 she still prefers to roll onto her stomach and push up with her arms but doesn't really matter too much as she can now do it. I'm sure your lo will get there - sounds like she's doing well and finding her own way of getting around!

Hi Jane 7, I think we've chatted before as I was worried about similar things with my ds. At 11 months he could only commando crawl (badly), could not get into a sitting position, couldn't really pull up and didn't cruise at all. I was getting so worried.

Just after 11 months he developed the strength to get onto his hands and knees and from there he quickly learned to get into a sitting position. He finally started proper crawling at 12 months and now there is no stopping him. He also pulls up really well and has finally started cruising. He's now 13 months and crawls like mad, although I think it'll be ages until he walks (he's too busy crawling to be bothered with walking at the moment)

From my experience I think it definitely makes it easier for them to get into a sitting position if they can get onto their hands and knees. I tried to teach ds to sit up from his side, but it was hopeless. One thing I did to encourage him to balance on his hands and knees was to put him with his knees on the floor and his hands on a block of some kind (like a couple of books), so his hands were higher than his knees. He could balance there much easier and then I gradually reduced the height of the block. This seemed to help him build up the strength in his upper body.

Did your dd spend much time on her tummy when she was little? My ds hated tummy time and I think he was a bit slow developing upper body strength as a result.

Your dd sounds lovely and if she's nearly walking then I wouldn't think there is too much wrong. She's maybe just taking a bit longer to develop upper body strength.
