How can I get my 4.3yr old son to stop burping loudly

He thinks its absolutely hilarious - he does it at nursery and at home, around his friends; but not if there are other adult friends around, so he can control it. If we tell him its bad manners & not funny & to try to burp quietly - he just laughs....

my 4 yo does it even in front of adults - in front of anyone tbh
he can talk in a burping voice and has taught my 21 month old to as well
i've given up trying to stop him and am ignoring now in the hope it will get less funny for him

chopstheduck · 26/11/2009 10:51

jsut ignore him, he is a 4yo!

Mine were having a competition this morning to see who could burp the most poshly - 9yo, 7yo, and 2 x 4yo.

The more attention they get the funnier it seems.

FleetMummy · 26/11/2009 10:57

When you have all worked it out can you let me know so I can get my 46 year old darling son husband to pack it in too.

He also still thinks farting is hilarious too.

NoMoreThankYou · 26/11/2009 11:02

but does your 46yr old do it in public too?

It has been known nomorethankyou, though not too often. And only when drunk amongst friends.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 26/11/2009 12:50

My 8yo DD does this. She has brought Pizza Hut to a stand still on more than one occassion.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 26/11/2009 12:59

I'd be more worried if he didn't find loud burps hilarious at 4. He knows not to do it with grown up friends around - fantastic! Ignore it and leave him to his totally developmentally normal stuff!!!

MrsBadger · 26/11/2009 13:00

stop dh laughing at them

NoMoreThankYou · 26/11/2009 13:24

CirrhosisByTheSea - I didnt realise this was totally developmentally normal stuff, as non of his peers seem to be doing this - where/what is your reference?

OP posts:
CirrhosisByTheSea · 26/11/2009 14:11

my reference is every member of the male sex, in the whole, entire world, since the dawn of time

NoMoreThankYou · 26/11/2009 14:57

not in my experience - i dont recall my brothers, my dad, or my DH doing this....

blimey. What are the chances, eh?

I'm sure your DS will mould to your very, very unusual male role models around him, so don't sweat it.

NoMoreThankYou · 26/11/2009 23:50

Im not sweating.... I may think the adult males around you who burb loadly in public are very very unsual....

as long as you put your hand over your mouth and say excuse me - you can burp as loud as you want.

especially at meal times - its a sign of good food! a compliment

CirrhosisByTheSea · 26/11/2009 23:53

oh god NoMore you are taking this a leeeeeeetle seriously. I'm talking about FOUR year olds. I'm saying that all of them (in my clearly very humble and working class experience ) find it amusing. Farting, likewise.

mimsum · 27/11/2009 10:06

just ignore it - that's absolutely standard and very good advice for changing pretty much any unwanted behaviour

He will grow out of it, he is only 4 and I'd be very surprised if he's still doing it when he's 40
