any advice gratefully received - dd didn't get her first tooth til a year old and at the grand age of 15 months has only 2 teeth, with no sign of any more, although she seems to be permanently teething!! I wondered how late other people's kids got their teeth, and also if it did affect their eating - my dd does struggle with a number of foods as she can't chew...! thanks!

My DD is nearly 9 months and only has 2 teeth and she is BLW and seems to be doing ok so far. Can eat pork chops and the like.

My friends DS is 20 months and still only has 6 teeth. He got his first ones at 14 months. He does struggle a bit with food but he is quite fussy too so not sure if it's the teeth or just him kicking up a fuss.

They should eventually come through for her, I wouldn't worry too much. I read somewhere too that the later they come through, the healthy the teeth are. Not sure how true that is but good for your DD if it is true!

dd1 was almost 1 when she got her first tooth. Late with all of them. No problems, don;t worry.

DS was 13 months when he got his first tooth and only had 6 at 18 months, DD 11 months and still waiting. Hasn't caused any problems with either of them - DD has gums of steel and has always outright rejected anything pureed and eats mainly finger foods. DS was the same and lack of teeth didn't seem to be an issue. The only thing that was difficult for DS was meat, but as long as it was casseroled and didn't require too much chewing it was fine.

dd's first tooth came at 15 months. I was getting quite desperate but the dentist waasn't concerned at all, so that put me at ease.

Eating wasn't much of a problem as her gums seemed to be made of rock . But we did have to puree/mash for much longer than we'd have liked to. Also had to be careful what fruits or biscuits we gave her as she tended to suck on it till it dissolved. So apples were out, for example. But banana slices and orange segments were fine.

thank you - we struggle with anything but soft fruit, and she loves to suck on carrots and bits of bacon, but can't make any headway into breaking them down!! but it's nice to hear that it's quite normal... roll on the next teeth...

DD is 3.9yo now with a full set but she got her first at 14mths, at 18mths she had 4 teeth, took her forever

DS2 has just turned 1 and no sign of any teeth yet!

He does seem to be able to manage most foods though - although I have no idea how Even nursery commented that they didn't know how he could eat what he does without any teeth

We gave him one of those mini caramel shortcakes (the very small square ones from supermarkets) the other day (it was his birthday!) and he literally put it in his mouth, chomped down and pulled it back out of his mouth with a huge chunk missing - which he then mushed in his mouth for a bit and swallowed!! Gums of steel indeed....

here's hoping for another two teeth soon!

DD was a very late teether.

I used to get the butcher to mince up lamb and pork and beef and I'd make lamb and apricot burgers, pork and apple burgers and beef and red pepper burgers in big batches and freeze them down and roll them out for meals along with fish, which she had no trouble with.

Grate loads of veg into things. DD had quite hard gums so managed surprisingly well.

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 27/11/2009 14:31

Both my 2 were late teethers. They managed fine. Ds2 is a fussy about food, but that was nothing to do with his teeth. More just his stubborness and hatred of anything green or orange .

Ds1 is 9 and has only got 2 of his big teeth so far. ds2 7 and not even one wobbly tooth yet.

My nephew is 15 months and hasn't a tooth in his head yet. He eats like a horse but only lumpy jars, gags on anything more solid. I have no idea if the two are related. He'll suck an Organix crisp on a good day.

Ceebee74 · 27/11/2009 15:18

Interestingly I bumped into my HV last night and asked her at what age would you start to worry that they had no teeth. She said that she hasn't come across a child whose teeth don't come through eventually plus she did say that the later their baby teeth come, the later they fall out and therefore the later the adult teeth come through which is better in later life.

I am holding onto that thought for my gorgeous 'gummy' baby

DS is 1 in three weeks, no teeth here yet.

BLW, eats everything he can get his hands on. Def agree with gums of steel - he eats steak, chicken/fish, cooked veg, biscuits and cakes all fruit except apple. He eats more/better than my 2.8yo DD.
