my 2yr old keeps waking up wet

my 2.1 year old wears Pampers Baby Dry at night. he was in 5+ but often woke up wet, so i thought reducing the size (to 4+) might help...

but he still often wakes up wet through (not often to sleeping bag, but certainly vest and PJs)...it never seems to bother him but i always feel awful seeing him wet as i think it must be so cold for him.

he does sleep for 12 hours a night but the baby dry ones are meant to last this long...

any thoughts on what i can do?

many thanks x

I'd go up a size rather than down (more surface area - more absorbent). Or you could try changing him in his sleep before you go to bed (I do this for my DS on occasion and he's never woken)

I agree - try a larger size. Or maybe a different brand - for a different shape?

I have had to change a sopping bed the last two evenings - ds2 who was dry at night, has regressed a bit since we moved and he started pre-school. One night, although he and his bed were soaked, his nappy was dry . Today I have bought night-time pull-ups, rather than normal ones. Am hoping to spare a babysitter the task of changing his bed tonight!

I had the same problem and switched to Tesco own brand which were more absorbent. Try moving up a size or changing brand.

barneybear · 24/11/2009 16:03

wow, it's a good tip to hear that Tescos are more absorbent - i wouldn't have even thought about changing brand to be honest...

think i'll change size AND brand tonight!!

many thanks for your help.

This happens with us but not all the time so I think it is how my son lies. He does lie on his front a lot and is always worse when I go in in the morning and he is like this. It has also happened with different nappies, although I have never gone up in size as he is so skinny. It is irritating though, and my son only sleeps about 9 hours! I second changing them once well asleep though.

ten10 · 24/11/2009 18:39

I never trust how many hours the nappies seem to claim they can be dry for, as my DS can sometimes wear one for 12 hours and wake up dry and sometimes he can wear one for 3 or 4 hours and soak through it.
Generally it is linked to how much he drinks in one go, as he would happily drink a pint of squash at a time if I allowed it,
so I regulate how much he can drink between teatime and bed time,

I also put a pair of plastic pants over the top of his nappy as this also helps reduce leakage,

PrettyCandles · 24/11/2009 18:46

Try changing brands. Ds2 is in Huggies at night, Pampers did not contain him.

If he's a good sleeper, you could quietly change his nappy when you go to bed. We did this with our older dc once they were in Huggies Pyjama Pants. Annoyingly, they would overload the front of the nappy, but the back would be bone dry.

Even baby boys can have erections when they are asleep, and when it subsides the penis may be left pointing up and so they pee over the top of the nappy. They might end up pointed sideways if they wriggle, and therefore pee out of the leg of the nappy - ds1 did this countless times.

maxybrown · 24/11/2009 18:48

Yeah my DS's are front heavy but I find the Huggies Active fit the best.

we change DD when we go to bed, after a couple of days she didn't even wake up.

acebaby · 24/11/2009 19:55

this can be a problem with 2yos because they start to do a single super-soaker as they are waking up rather than lots of little wees during the night. Believe it or not, it is the first step to becoming dry at night

4+ sounds small for a 2yo (DS2 is in 5 at 18mo). There is considerable overlap in the weight ranges. Alternatively, he will not be able to soak himself out of a 'bumper' cloth nappy with extra large popper motherease wrap (www.kittykins.co.uk/cloth-nappies/type/5/brand/easy+peasy+nappies).

My Ds at 2.2 is in size 4!!! And the faseners still well and truly meet in the middle. he is a lightweight

geordieminx · 24/11/2009 21:47

Have exactly the same problem with ds 2.5.

Things to try/consider:

Boots do booster pads - bit like a sanitary towel, they are meant for re-useables, but add extra absorbancy.

Plastic pants over nappy.

We have found the ds is worse in pj's than in sleepsuits, as he has a tendancy to rummage about in his nappy (typical bloke) - if he has a sleepsuit on he cant get in there as well - infact tonight he has gone to bed in a size 5 pampers (always found them the best), a pair of pants over the top(age 4-5 so big enough to cover nappy), a vest with poppers over the top of that, and then his sleepsuit. Hopefully all of this will keep his hands out
