The difference between joking/banter and being rude/insulting

I am very strict abut insulting language with my DSs and 6 & 8 e.g the word stupid is not allowed in our house.

At work this week (and often) there were a group of us generally having a laugh with a bit of banter, but it occurred to me that if my DCs were to speak to anyone like that I'd be furious, although nothing was said that caused anyone any offence.

So now I'm worried that I'm bringing up a couple of humourless boys who will never fit into office life.

Where is the line and when do they start to understand the difference between a joke and an insult?

Lisbey, when mine were growing up, I also didn't allow any kind of name calling or things that might be hurtful or cruel to others. They are both grown up now, have great senses of humour, a great relationship with each other, but most importantly they are considerate and sensitive to other people. You can be full of fun and humour without being nasty, you sound a great mum.
