What magazine do 9yr old girls read?

My DD9 is getting a bit old for some of the "younger" magazines now and I want to get her something more geared towards her age but not cramming makeup and boys down her throat - any suggestions?

IMO there are none. It's all boys and lip gloss from now on. Get her some books instead.

I beg to differ,

DD2 has National Geographic Kids on subscription

fab fab fab magazine

DD's 9 y/o friend (going on 10 now) reads the Beano. In fact she's totally Beano mad - has Beano rucksack, badges, the lot.

Fruitysunshine · 20/11/2009 17:05

That is great Pesto - that is right up her street. She is such a bookworm and science lover it would really meet her needs!

Be very careful, even the Top Of The Pops mag is too 'old'. I agree with cybil, there is no inbetween. It goes from ponies to boys, make up and true life stories .

DD is 11 and gets the Dr Who comic

cocolepew · 20/11/2009 17:08

I like the look of NGK actually...

Takver · 20/11/2009 17:08

That's really funny, was going to say NG Kids but thought she'd be too old for it.

I'm waiting for dd to grow into this one cos I fancy it myself (particularly the gizmos)

my 9yr old reads girl talk and loves it. She gets loads of freebies in it and loves the stories and things you get involved with it.

Hi there - I hit the same problem back when I was with my ex-husband, for my then-step-daughter. I wanted a girl's magazine for her but one that wasn't full of make-up, boys, celebrities, and other fluffy stuff - she has a brain after all, I wanted something that didn't try to make her a 21-year-old before she was even 10!

Looking around I found absolutely nothing in this country at all, nothing that I considered "good" for a growing girl. However, in the US, I discovered New Moon magazine www.newmoon.com/magazine/ . It states in its blurb that it's "an inspirational magazine and online for girls ages 8 to 12 to engage in self-discovery, creativity, and community." I got a subscription for my step-daughter and actually really liked it - it does deliver what it promises. I liked it so much, that I've got it bookmarked for when my nearly-3-year-old daughter is older; I will definitely be buying it for her!

Just my opinion, you understand, but I thought it was great.

Another vote for NG kids or Aquilla

MintyCane · 25/11/2009 16:01

That new moon thing looks really good but is it only in the US ?

slug · 25/11/2009 16:28

DD is 8 and is extremely fond of the Dr Who magazine.

Arianrhod · 25/11/2009 16:36

New Moon is only in the US, yes, but they do subscriptions to the UK without batting an eyelid, and it's available to choose on their subscription page.

PandaG · 25/11/2009 16:37

DD is nearly 8, and has NG kids - only suitable thing I have found.

Having said that - just googled Aquilla - I think that would be right up DS's street, he still reads the Beano, but it won't be long before he has grown out of it.

Discovery box is lovely as well

MintyCane · 25/11/2009 17:06

Also Anorak magazine and Puffin Post

pointydogg · 25/11/2009 17:11

Not make up and boyz? Hm.

What are her hobbies? Sound slike you need a hobby or theme magazine.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2009 17:26

NG kids is fab. dd got a bit bored with aquila, there wasn't really enough in it to keep her interested.

henryhuggins · 25/11/2009 17:45

NG is ok, we get it for dd (8) as there are few alternatives in the UK. There's a great deal of advertising and product placement in it tho.
