Newborn belly button - weeping a bit - what to do?

Dd2 is almost 3 weeks, the cord stump came off about a week ago. Her belly button doesn't seem to be healing properly - inside is still red and weeping a bit. We're cleaning with alcohol every day, but it's just not getting any better. What should we do?

My youngest is 14 so prob will not be much help but 'back in my day' we had a powder to put on every day - even after the stump fell off to dry it out.
Hopefully a newer mummy will come along to advise x x x

I remember the powder as my oldest is 17 years old. However my youngest is nearly 6 weeks, and this time I was told to leave the stump alone, only wiping with water and cotton wool on occasion. It healed just the same. I wonder if you might be better off just leaving it.

Still, in such a young child, if you've any fears about infection I'd contact a doctor, or your midwife, just to be sure.

My dd had a granuloma which is where the belly button doesn't seal properly by itself. I had to take her to the GP to get it "sealed" with a silver nitrate pen (not painful or anything). I think she was a little bit older that yours (I mentioned it at my 6 week check).

Keep cleaning with saline for a week or so and if its still not getting better, then pop her off to the GP
