Should I be worried?

Hi
My DD is 13.5 months and doesn't yet crawl/bum shuffle and doesn't like to bear weight - so often lifts her legs to avoid this if you try to support her in a standing position.

She also has no teeth yet, doesn't seem to understand any words or point at things etc and doesn't seem to be trying to say any words (although she does babble).

As you can probably tell - she is my first. Any thoughts appreciated!

what does your hv think?

tothymammysing · 18/11/2009 19:53

Nothing really as I try to avoid her (long story but really have no faith in her ability to advise me properly) but I have taken DD to the GP a couple of months ago and he checked her hips - didn't think there was a problem at the time but as time has gone on and no development I'm starting to get concerned

I suppose I was hoping for any examples of DC who have been at similar stages developmentally and all is well now

If you're worried I would go back to your GP and ask for a referral to a paediatrician. She sounds like she is a little delayed but normally most delayed children get there in the end and in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter if they walk a bit late. Can she sit and roll? Does she make good eye contact and smile at you? A paediatrician would just rule out that there wasn't any reason for the delay and reassure you. They may suggest a referal to physio or portage service.

tothymammysing · 18/11/2009 20:50

Thanks for replying - she can sit (since 6 months) but doesn't roll, although I have seen her roll a few times she doesn't do it often.

She's great with eye contact and smiles lots. she's also recenty started trying to pass toys to me but pulls them back when i reach for them!

Maybe I will go back to GP

I think you will get a lot of stories of children who did things at that sort of time but I think you're right to get it checked out. No doubt she'll do three of those things for the first time on the morning of your appointment

ConnorTraceptive · 18/11/2009 20:58

DS1 didn't get a single tooth until he was 18 months old so I wouldn't worry about that at all. He also didn't walk until around this time and was very late to roll. He did crawl from around 8 months though. His speech was fine

DS2 babbled but didn't say any words until 17 months and even now at 20months he only has a few and not all are very clear.

If it's worrying you go back to the GP but I would perhaps wait until she is 18 months and see where you are then

Dorchies · 18/11/2009 21:10

Sitting is a good sign, and often children who sit well are quite happy to just sit and play and as long as all their toys are within reach they are often contented. Have you tried making all her toys just a little bit our of reach so she has to strech herself a bit to get them? All the posts on here are quite right - they all do things at different ages. The Health Visitor will do a check at 2 years (unless in wales when it's sometimes 18 months) but as that's still a little way away and you're worried i'd go to the GP.

tothymammysing · 18/11/2009 21:19

Thanks very much for your replies - I think I'll wait and see for a while longer. As StealthPolarBear says no doubt she'll start all at once!

The children of friends I have known to do this ref the weight bearing have had something called hypermobility. It's common and not a problem to treat - just means some special exercises to help. It's caused by the joints being very bendy.

might be worth asking about.

LargeGlassofRed · 18/11/2009 21:33

yes Juillet have two friends who's dc's were like this. Th first walked at 2 the second not till 2 and a half. Both had hypermobility.
The first friend didn't get much imput but the second had physio for her dd.

tothymammysing · 18/11/2009 21:43

Thank you - I did mention hypermobility to the GP when I saw him a few months ago but after checking DD's hips, I think he thought I was a neurotic first time mum (not saying I'm not btw!)

tothymammysing
I have a relative whose dd just started crawling at 15 months.

My own ds who is 14 months is not responding to his name at home (but does respond to it when we're in an unfamiliar place) which I just happened to realize today.
