Does your toddler call anything/anyone by a strange name? Have you worked out what they mean?

For the past few weeks DS (18 months) has been pointing at any black man he sees, in real life or on the telly, and saying 'Daddy!' It's been getting quite embarrassing at times, especially if the men have been with their wives, and has been baffling me as DP is white with blond hair.

I finally solved the mystery today when Dizzee Rascal came on the telly! Bonkers is DS's favourite song, and I guess he thought the men looked like Dizzee and it just came out sounding like Daddy!!

What words has your toddler got a bit wrong? Did they create any embarrassing situations?.....

not embarrassing but DS uses the word "mitman" for Spiderman, Superman and Gingerbreadman (although I think recently Superman has become Superman). Doesn't seem to have a problem like this with any other words, think he just likes it!

My DS1 called me 'Dad' until he was about 2

DD calls ice lollies bree brees. I didn't understand for a while but eventually worked out that I used to hold them up to her individually to see which one she wanted while saying 'strawberry, raspberry etc'. She has called them bree brees from when she was cutting her first tooth so just over 1. It's stuck and we all call them that now.

She also used to shout out 'tummyay' whenever she saw a balloon which baffled us for ages until we visited my niece who was watching Barney and the big purple monstrosity was playing with a balloon and singing 'tarara bum dee ay'. DD pointed at it and said 'see tummyay'. Turns out they'd watched it together months previously when dd was little and visiting for the day.

Again not embarassing but couldn't work out why DS called candles "no no nos". Eventually realised it was because whenever he showed an interest in them, I was there nagging him "no no no- hot" or "no no no- dont touch them" etc.

DS3 (2.5) has a 'friend' at nursery named 'Mishmarsh'.

Asked his keyworker, who has no idea who that is (hence friend in inverted commas) and there are no children with a similar sounding name. Ask him to recall names, and he pronounces them perfectly

claireybepositive · 16/11/2009 12:44

Inspector respecter = xfactor for dd (3.5)

Poshpaws · 16/11/2009 12:46

recall other names

LilRedWG · 16/11/2009 12:47

DD used to call her cousin, Charlotte, RaRa. DD has now progressed onto Charlotte, but she is forever RaRa to me.

My 18 month old DS calls me 'Daddy' and every other man that he sees. Very embarrassing going around Tesco's . Also, all food is known as 'Banana'

preggersplayspop · 16/11/2009 13:18

My toddler calls his little builder person 'Bob Biffmas', which I think is a cross between Bob the Builder and Father Christmas.

He has 2 farmers also in a farm set and he calls them 'Ronald' and 'Donald' which is from Old MacDonald (though I think this may have been introduced by his father when they were playing with them).

BornToFolk · 16/11/2009 13:21

Scissors are "sharp fings". He was asking for blue and sharp fings the other day and it took me a while to work out he wanted glue and scissors!

Balloons are bidderboons. We think he's trying to say "birthday balloon"

My DD used to call my sister (lucy) Zhu Zhu, my best friend(Liv) De De and my Mum(Granmda) Ga Ga.

I don't think they had any special meanings just her own way of pronouncing them, they stuck for a long, long time!

geordieminx · 16/11/2009 13:28

Ds started calling his Grannies "Ladda" when he first learnt to talk... They are now Ladda Beemer (she has a BMW) and Ladda Citroen (yup).

He can say Granny but refuses to call them Granny as they are Laddas.

Make of that what you will.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 16/11/2009 13:29

My DD used to call anyone called Thomas "Jumper". Never got to the bottom of that one!

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 16/11/2009 13:31

Dd1 calls my dad 'uh-oh'. It was one of the first things she said at about 14 months. We worked out that it was because every time he sees her he says 'uh-oh, here comes trouble!' she still calls him it (she's 2) even though she knows it should be grandad. She also refuses to call dh's dad 'grandad', she calls him 'peeper' (Peter) instead!

Kathyis12feethighandbites · 16/11/2009 13:34

Our favourite was dd calling a torch a 'treasure sausage'.

DS insists 'a knife' is 'an ife'.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 16/11/2009 13:51

DD1 used to call a friend of ours 'Pear' but his name was David. Stuck for years.

LittleOneMum · 16/11/2009 18:55

Thank you so much for your posts. I haven't got anything to add, but I've just cried with laughter at my desk

HeadFairy · 16/11/2009 19:03

Ds calls Bob the Builder "Bobda" and Father Christmas is "Farmer Christmas"

He's always called his dummy his "numna" (no idea where that came from) and my dad will forever be GanGan after my niece couldn't say Grandad. Her little sister and now my ds call him that too.

elliepac · 16/11/2009 19:07

When DS was little he couldn't pronounce his chilminder's name (Alison) properly so he called her 'arse'

elliepac · 16/11/2009 19:10

Oh and another one, for some reason he calls my boobs boogies...what the hell does he think he's watching when boogie beebies comes on
