Drawings, What to expect from a 2-3yo?

What can your 2-3yo draw?

DD is 3.8yo and drawing people/houses/fruit, DS is 2.6yo and drawing Q's/E's/O's/Squares (he says doors! But they're squares!)

Just wondering what the norm is?

My 4YO DS doesn't really draw anything, he is starting to try though eg, saying his scribble is a rocket. Don't know if I can bring myself to look at the brilliant works of art [inadequate mother emoticon]

Bacon - my ds just draws circles and he is 4.1. I felt a little depressed looking at other dc's work, I have to say! But, he is brilliant in so many other ways. Perhaps art will not be his forte, time will tell..

the norm for all 3 of mine at that age was a scribble (or a big scribble on a good day).

Art and craft didn't really grab them to be honest

ds2 is 2.11 and only scribbles but he has gdd

My mum is a nursery teacher and told me - that children are expected to be able to abscribe meaning to their scribbles by end of nursery. And that a person with arms and legs is expected of most by end of nursery.

I believe that dd is exceptionally good at art (and sadly, this one has bugger all to do with my exceptional mothering skills - I'll still take credit for her lovely nature though ). It's just her. No idea if it will continue, or whether she will plateau but yes, am looking forward to making loads of xmas decs this year. All kids are different, but of course, I am proud of her for her drawing skills - and acknowledge with her that everyone draws differently (so she draws a different style person from me, and her friends, different styles of illustrations in books etc), and people can do things that others can't yet (like her friend who can climb up and down the fireman's pole but she can't yet).

bah, ascribe! (and person with arms and legs means a face with lines coming out of it)

Remembered this thread from the other day and decided to post because DD who is 2.9 got me all emotional over her beautiful picture yesterday . She draws really well and doesn't really do scribbles any more. I have one of her first 'person' pictures (circle for head, 2 eyes, mouth, stick arm and legs) drawn when she was just 2.
Yesterday I asked her to draw a picture of her baby brother in a thank you card for his birth gifts and it was so detailed - head, eyes with pupils, nose, smiley mouth, ears, hair and for the first time ever a BODY (with buttons LOL), arms from the body, with hands (first time ever too), legs and feet. She then carefully 'wrote' his name - just squiggles, but she is getting interested in letters now. I had tears in my eyes, and because it was in a thank you card I couldn't keep it (was giving to someone there and then) - I should have taken a photo, gutted I didn't think at the time. I bet if I ask her to draw another I'll just get random dinosaurs, beetles and spiders which seem to be her favourite things to draw! She has just started drawing cars recently, with at least 8 wheels and lots of little faces inside!

We have always drawn with her, since being tiny. She has held her pencil correctly pretty much since she first picked one up - we didn't have to show her. I think like Adairs little one she is just naturally talented at drawing, my Mum is an exceptional amateur artist, so maybe it is hereditary? Can you tell she is my PFB , wait till she starts school - G&T threads here I come!

DD is 2.6 and likes to draw people mostly. She's just started giving them bodies instead of heads with arms and legs sticking out of them. She is quite good with attention to detail ie they have eyebrows, ears, earrings, hair, hats, spots (!), grandad always has glasses and no hair, daddy has a policeman's helmet etc. She can do basic flowers and houses and that sort of thing but generally comes back to people.

She can write her name and mummy and daddy and also numbers but that's just repetition/copying really.

Lionstar, aw bless, it is emotional isn't it? And hard to throw them away. ShowofHands, that's pretty amazing to be able to copy letters - and draw everything she does- at that age.

My dd (and me when I was that age) draws people mostly too. My dad tells a story of when I was little, and he asked me to draw a cow in a field. I drew a little girl instead and said 'she is the one that looks after the cows...'
