Omezaprole / Losec

Hi mummies

For those of you following the development of treating DD2 for her silent reflux, she is now on Losec, started it last eve. 3.5ml daily. Apparently results should be pretty instant and with another night of hysteria we're not optiistic but we shall see.
She is always shivering now, and her tongue is always covered in white. I am so sad.

FFM - I totally understand how you feel, this silent reflux is so so hideous, my DD2 has been suffering with it for ages and it is only now Doc is finally taking it seriously.

Glad you have got the Omezaprole and fingers crossed it works for you.

I just keep telling myself this won't last forever...

Rycie · 12/11/2009 08:36

Hi freyfreysmum, I just posted on your other thread but will repeat here - Losec takes about 5 days to properly work (didn't your doc tell you this?)so hang in there, it really will make a difference.

Its also important that you administer correctly - do not crush the tablet as that messes with the active ingredients apparently, dissolve in a little hot water, eggcup is good, and give with a spoon - a lot will get left behind in a syringe. What dose are you giving.

Rycie · 12/11/2009 08:40

Spanna - it won't last forever, this said from someone finally coming out the other side

I do think it takes a while to get reflux babies more comfy though - its a combo of the drugs and consistently doing the lifestyle changes and after a while it settles down. (I didn't mention before about the dummy - v.good for reflux to babies to suck).

It is hectically stressful though, I am so sympathetic for you both. To see your little one so uncomfortable, combined with the difficult feeding, poor routine, terrible sleeping etc etc. It is really hard.

Ah thank you. I am sure the doctor did tell me this, he has been great, but this morning my brain is like mushy peas after a bad night with dd2. I will do that re tablets, as had let them dissolve but had given it by syringe that they provided. Told to give (baby 12lb) 3.5ml once daily.
Thank you re advice with dummy, will try that. As for everything else, you name it we;ve tried it.
She now we find this morning has developed thrush in her mouth, despite the fact that I sterilise Everything and am meticulous about it.

oh I'm so sorry to hear about the thrush, I know it sounds a bit out there, but ayurvedic medicine believes that oral thrush is a result of constipation and indigestion....sound like your dd at all? A good probiotic would help with this, and is also worth giving reflux babies in any event - any one with lactus bacillus in it.

FFM, hang in there. Omeprazole should really make a difference. it stops the stomach from producing acid pretty much immediately, but it takes a few days for the esophagus to heal. I second what Rycie said about administering it properly. Our DS was still suffering horribly when we discovered that most of the little granules were getting stuck in the syringe, so he wasn't really getting his medicine...
we now give it to him on a teaspoon and then "flush" whatever's left on it straight into his mouth with water from a syringe.

Freyfreysmum · 12/11/2009 13:07

Ok thank you so much Rycie & duende. Would you say 1 x 3.5ml a day is sufficient for 12lb baby? I may contact GP to check not twice a day, as that equates to half a tab once a day (not even that, nearer a third). I will keep percevering and keep you posted. Thank you so much. PS HV being pretty average, doesnt even think the reflux is a problem as long as a baby is putting on weight and hydrated. Said her 'poor feeding style' (ie 1oz every half hour if that, whenever not beside herself) is due to the thrush, making her mouth sore.

PS also trying chamomilla and acidophilus which worked well for a friend's baby.

FFM, I would say give it a week and see if it makes a difference. My DS is on 5mg a day atm and he's 16lb.
this is a low dose and the paed said that it could safely be doubled - if required.
it is also ok to give the whole dose in one go as it stays in the body for 24 hours.

my HVs were useless too. Sice DS was 6 weeks old I was telling everyone I thought he could have reflux or lactose intolerance, but I was of course treated like a neurotic first time mum. It now turns out he has both! He has been on lactose free formula since Monday and so far (fingers crossed!) he is like a different baby. No screaming, just normal baby whinging sometimes, settling down for naps well and sleeping through the night!

Lactose intolerance is pretty easy to diagnose - they do a stool test called reducing substances, if it shows that there are sugars present in the stool, it means the baby is lactose intolerant. Maybe this could be worth investigating in your case as well..?

Gosh Riven, I'm so sorry to hear that, I have a friend's ds who had a similar problem with Losec, but was then ok funnily enough on Nexium which is a bit stronger. How old is dd?

FFM - I must say, I started her out on half a tablet a day and after a week or so put it up to half a tablet in the morning and one in the evening, and she would have been far less than 12lb so there probably is scope for a bigger dose, but probably best to check with doctor first.
