2.4yo has sore mouth and inconsolable - is this teething or something more?

My DS is generally a happy, easy going little boy who sleeps well and eats well. Over the last 4 days he has been inconsolable a lot of the time, saying his mouth is sore (pointing to the back gums), can't eat anything other than porridge and is just completely miserable. He is also dribbling a LOT (soaked through his t-shirt). Sucking on his dummy makes it worse too. He doesn't have a temperature or seem to have earache. Ibuprofen seems to help.

I think it must be his molars coming through, but it does seem very severe and I am not sure if it is something more serious - has anyone else had this reaction to the last teeth in their 2-year old?

check his hands and feet, does he have tiny pinprick spots on them? If so he might have hand, foot and mouth which is soooo painful.
Last molars are pretty terrible though poor boy

Hi Nixies, my lad is the same but in shorter 'bursts'. For about half a day at a time I just can't figure out what's wrong then Nurofen makes it all better! Very similar symptoms to what you describe. I imagine if there's more than one tooth moving then it could well last longer?

It might be worth just feeling his neck glands as if there's an infection such as tonsilitis then they could be up. I should think he would be listless and lacking in energy if he had an infection though and you don't mention that (disclaimer: I am not a doctor!)

Hope it passes soon!

Forgot to say, mine is 2.3

Just thought I'd post the outcome - I took DS to the GP as it didn't seem to be improving and I couldn't believe that teething would be so intense for so long. Anyway, turns out he had stomatitis which is a virus that causes inflamation of the mucous glands in the mouth. Poor little guy. Nothing can be done other than to keep him dosed up on nurofen. Another couple of days and he was back to normal.
