At what age does the cluster feeding / evening screaming start?

DD is almost 5 weeks and I'm trying to figure out if it just hasn't started yet or whether we have one of those easy babies I read about in the books and that my friends all seemed to have first time round.
I remember DS doing it, know it got easier about 4/5 months but can't remember whether he always did it or whether it started at a certain age.

I think if she hasn't started by now that she is just an easier baby, also I personally found I had more milk and BF went easier the second time, might be that. You are also a more experienced mum etc... well done and enjoy!

DD started at about a week old and lasted until 4/5 months. So fingers crossed

With dd is was immediate and lasted for months.

Ds is 6 weeks and shows no signs of being like this.....relax and enjoy an easier baby...I am

StealthPolarBear · 20/10/2009 11:08

actially i think she does have a much milder version of it, but in themornings, feeds feeds and has 10 minute naps until about 11ish when she has a longer sleep. much easier to deal with at this time of day!

but she doesnt scream or cry much, in fact the novelty of her wobbly lip and "help me mummy" face hasn't worn off for me - shes so cute!

Dd started at 3 weeks and lasted until about 5 months. I remember it was 3 weeks as dh had just gone back to work and my mum was staying over.

She cried all afternoon and NHS direct sent me to OOH. I'll never forget the words of the OOH doctor, "There is no medical reason for the crying."

CatIsSleepy · 20/10/2009 11:14

it might not start at all!

dd2 didn't do this (actually dd1 didn't either)-mind you there has been plenty of screaming at other times...

however she was very mellow for the first 6-8 weeks as I recall, and never mutated into an evening screamer

StealthPolarBear · 21/10/2009 20:58

well last 2 nights have involved lots of screaming

seem to remember it kicked in about 3 weeks got bit better by about 8 weeks and was pretty bearable after about 3/4 months (wouldnt go down quietly but wasnt drowning out my tv and those of anyone in a 200 yard radius). that said the mistake I was was not to keep on feeding it - bugger the books dd could guzzle unfeasible amounts for someone so small.

StealthPolarBear · 22/10/2009 08:51

thanks! She's a bit under the weather so I'm desperately hoping it's related to that but might not be
Yes, I'm just feeding whenever she opens her mouth, but also trying to spend some time / do bedtime for DS so it makes it difficult, oh not to mention eat my tea!!

I need some comfort knowing that my 2wk old boys breastfeeding bhvr is common. I have abt cluster feeding & assume this is wots happening... Feeding isn't so bad daytime, but at the regular 11pm feed it takes me until at least 4am to settle him. He falls asleep during the feed, I stir him to make sure he's finished, but as soon as I put him down he cries & wants feeding again ! He gets frustrated, knaws his fists head buts the breast before settling for a short feed before the cycle starts again - is thus normal and it cluster feeding ?

Also he's an incredibly windy baby, he seems to strain / grunt & makes fists generally looking uncomfortable which I thought was strange being breastfed??

I hope I'm not alone. Any advice / words of wisdom?

emmybaird · 03/11/2010 05:00

No words of wisdom just I'm in same boat with my three week old. I'm hoping its a growth spurt and she will settle as she gets bigger. Its wearing isn't it.

ethelina · 03/11/2010 06:10

Ds hasn't really cluster fed at all except for 1 night in each growth spurt. He is 7 weeks now so hopefully he isnt going to start as a regular thing. I asked the nurse at my 6 week check and she said something like "if he hasn't started by now, he probably won't, and he seems very chilled which is a reflection of your personality, so keep on relaxing and go with the flow" So I am Smile
