Newborn - not feeding just sleeping

Hmm, our lovely dd2 was born this morning at 10lb3.5 yay, exactly the same as dd1 2 years ago. She fed from me for nearly 2 hours finishing about 8am, but has literally had a few ml colustrum since. She has been asleep all day. Our community mw came out at 3pm and said to try skin to skin and make sure she got a few drops of colustrum and remained hydrated.

Now getting a little bit worried as 12 hrs since last feed, and still sleepies?

You should probably wake her up. But newborns are usually more or less nocturnal so hope you're not too shattered from lots of visits today as you'll probably be up most of the night. It may take a while (many days) to convert her into more diurnal being, though, as with all tiny babies, she'll still need to be taking in lots of nutrition during the night as her wee body will process the milk very fast.

Congratulations and hope you have some help.

I would strip her off and wake her up, they need frequent feeds to flush kidneys.

I think I'd wake her up if it's been 12 hours. DD1 did sleep for 11 hours on her first day, (I think she was knackered from being born!) and the Drs in hospital then said that I should wake her if she gets to 12 hours.

Strip her down to her nappy and plonk her on your chest and she'll probably soon get the message.

Congratulations! DD1 did this. Born at 09.20, fed then slept all day....then woke up at 10pm & cried & fed all night...for 12 weeks.

hmm well i remember when ds1 was born they said it's fine and normal for them to sleep for the first day.
that said, it isn'tgoing to hurt if you try and wake her and give her a feed

DD was like this when she was very young - tips which worked for me to wake her to feed were tickling the soles of her feet gently and lifting her "free" arm to wake her. Also made sure she wasn't too cosy - so stripped her down to her vest and nappy to feed.

Good luck

My DD was like this. She could sleep through a nappy change.

I would wake and try to feed every 4 hours if they haven't woken (but leave alone at night!). It will help your milk supply and establish the difference between day and night for them.

I'm going through the same at the moment and as you can see from the time of this post I'm up because she's been up every half hour screaming. 2 nappy changes, 3 feeds, lots of regurgitated milk and mucus helpBlush

ThreeNine · 05/01/2012 06:37

Mine would have been the same but the MWs at the hospital made me wake her up. They were worried she was sleepy due to lack of food.

Stripping her for skin to skin is a good idea.
