This afternoon I went with DS and DD 'round the block'. They were on their bikes, I was jogging to keep up . While we were out we met three of DS's school friends, also on their bikes and they joined us. When we went in for dinner, they asked if DS could go back out again and I agreed.
So basically, DS (age 8) and two others from his year and one slightly older lad went twice 'round the block'. We live on a purely residential road and the 'block' means crossing two very minor residential roads, going past a small parade of 5 shops, one of which is a 7-11 type and always open.
DS was wearing his helmet (as he always does) but the other children were not.
Was I right to give him this freedom or was I wrong?
By virtue of the fact that he came back when he was asked and when I spied on him out of the window he did stop properly to cross the road, I'm thinking I did the right thing.
I'm pretty certain I'm going to get some different opinions but I am very interested to hear them all. please.
TIA
