HELP! How long before she says "MAMA" ?!

DD is 9months + 2 weeks. She's been happily shouting "DADA" for over 2 months and is babbling along nicely but she is showing no signs of saying "Mama".

How long did you wait before hearing "mama" after your child said "dada" ? Should I be concerned ???

my son of 5 has decided he wants to call me 'mother' now instead of mum - i've told him i prefer him to call me mum - the end result is that he is calling me mother even more!!!

snickers · 20/05/2003 17:55

jinna - I LOVE mother... How lovely!!!

Personally, I've always hated "mum". I still call my mum, mummy! DH calls his mum, mother, or "num" cause that's how it looks when she writes it down!

Maybe they don't say Mama much because they know we're always there and they don't need to grab our attention.

DS1 said Mama and dada for the first time on the same day (bless his diplomatic little soul). DS2 stuck to DaDEE for ages. I used to take great delight in bursting DHs bubble by pointing to inanimate household objects and asking DS2 what they were. He never failed to answer DaDEE, bless him.

My dd said Mama first at about 8 months, I am truely honored! Dada came later with gaga, baba and now duck, from about 10months she really used Mama for me and Dada for her dad. Friends are sure she has said many other things mainly their childrens names but I think they are hearing demon voices. She watches very closely when you repeat names of things and trys to say something but I am not sure what. Her favourite thing is making monkey and snake noises, much more fun and has been doing this since about 8months.

my dd (9 1/2 months) also says Daddee - very excitedly when dh walks into room (it is pretty cute ). She occasionally says mama but not in reference to me - just a sound. My theory is that we spend all day with them and say things like..'where's daddy?', 'daddys' coming home', 'daddys' here!' etc so they hear it a lot more. .....thats what I keep telling myself anyway....

Ghosty · 21/05/2003 05:17

I remember that DS used to embarrass me in shops by pointing at any Tom Dick or Harry and saying 'Daddy!' ...
I seriously can not remember when DS said either but he was saying them by the time he was 12 months ....

SoupDragon · 21/05/2003 08:17

Oh yes, Ghosty! Everytime the postman bought a registered letter or parcel, DS1 would shout "Daddy! in delight. Not helped by the fact that DS1 and the postman were blond and DH and I are both dark haired...

My DS does not say very much (just turned 2) but like most he said DaDEEE long before deciding that Mummy was far too long to say - and so calls me MeMe :-) From what I can see boys also take longer than girls to get the hang of talking and using a potty.

My ds used to call me "umma" - I think mama or mummy is quite difficult for a child to say. Dada is definately just a sound before it is a word.

Dd is 13 months and hasn't said any recognisable words as yet but lots of babbling and will imitate words such as boo.

Khara · 21/05/2003 21:40

Ds1 was saying "dada" at about 9 months, but didn't say "mama" until he was 17 months! Ds2 made up for it, he said "mama" first, and had several other words before he managed "dada". And now he's just started calling any bloke he sees "dada."

zebra · 21/05/2003 22:24

Wrong for me to call others liars... but I struggle to believe any baby that say "Mama" or "Dada" before 18 months and truly means it as a special word for their parents.

DS was about 22 months before he started saying "Mimi" and "Didi" and he meant us, not just a coincident babble. DD is 19 months and although she makes a "Mama" noise, only recently do I think it might mean me; before that I reckon it was just her default 'upset' noise. She certainly doesn't have a special word for her daddy, yet... but she does say "Anya" for her big brother, which is how he said his own name at a similar age, too.
