Hi, my brothers step daughter is due to turn 8 next week. I thought about buying her some books by Alex Scheffler, the gruffalo, room on the broom etc. I read these to my daughter and she enjoyed listening to them too. I don't know if they are too young for her.

My 8 yo DD has really got into Malory Towers and St Clares's books recently.
But personally I would get her book tokens.Reading tastes are so personal

She may still enjoy them in a library or as an "old friend" from the bookshelf but you would n't buy them for a child that age.

Agree with LIZS. I looked after my friend's 7yo recently and she very happily snuggled up with us to listen to a Kipper storybook I was reading to my 3yo. But I know for a fact that she reads quite substantial chapter books at home and would be very insulted if I bought her a picture book as a present. Tread carefully!

Tidey I loved the Anastasia Krupnik books too, and had completely forgotten about them! Will have to seek them out for dd. She had a funny little brother and a bust of Sigmund Freud iirc. I read and re read those books when I was about 8 or 9.
Op I agree with whoever said a book of poetry could be nice, especially if she enjoyed the rhythmic style of The Gruffallo. I think childten grow out of poetry books less quickly than stories iykwim.

The Little House on the Prairie series and the Enid Blyton books (both fond memories from age 8) -- anything with chapters and a sympathetic female character, about 130 pages long.
