This is my DD.

This is all she says ALL day, to anything I say.

This and near constant whinging.

For example I ask "DD why are you whinging? What's up?"

DD: "NO! NO it's not! Not whinging!"

Can you guess how old she is?

What am I doing wrong? Is there anything I can do about this behaviour before my head explodes?

Is she 7/8?

AvengingGerbil · 18/08/2009 19:12

9yrs 8 months, perchance?

kitesarefun · 18/08/2009 19:13

No

Oh god, don't tell me this continues till they're 8?

At least....
How old is she then?

DidEinsteinsMum · 18/08/2009 19:27

My guess is 3 or 4.

PixelHerder · 18/08/2009 19:35

I'd guess 3 - it sounds familiar...

duchesse · 18/08/2009 19:39

9? Mine are a right bunch of whingy moos.

potatofactory · 18/08/2009 19:39

3? A threenager?

MarthaFarquhar · 18/08/2009 19:40

Mine's 2.5, and verrry similar ATM

suwoo · 18/08/2009 19:41

I'd say 2. Mine is similar.

Smithagain · 18/08/2009 19:41

3

or 7

we had a bit of a lull in between those ages, if that helps

IsItMeOr · 18/08/2009 19:42

I'd assumed 2?

differentDM · 18/08/2009 19:43

she's about 7, I'd say.

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 18/08/2009 19:45

I'd say between 2.5 and 3.5 (if my DD is anything to go by). Please don't say older, I'll kill someone if it goes on into 4!

kitesarefun · 18/08/2009 19:47

Yep she's 2...going on 13

Anyone got any advice to make it stop? Please?

Had to put her to bed early as my brain was melting

OP posts:
catinthehat2 · 18/08/2009 19:51

7

Smithagain · 18/08/2009 19:58

Advice to make it stop:

Refuse to understand anything said in a whinging voice. Although that does mean spending 95% of the day saying "Sorry, I can't understand you" "Sorry I can't understand you" "Sorry, I can't understand you" Which is also irritating.

Alternatively

Wait until the glorious day when you suddenly realise she's stopped doing it.

Personally, I tried the first, but the second was more effective.

kitesarefun · 18/08/2009 20:01

But smithagain I might be waiting until she's 8 if the previous posts are anything to go by.

THAT's 6 long years away. I will be a jibbering mess by then

To be fair, I think DD1 stopped at about five. But she seems to have started again at about 6.5. The whining is different this time, though, and easier to reason with. And she is at school some of the time, which is good for a bit of head space .

MultiTaskingMum · 18/08/2009 21:40

I'm with Smithagain - refuse to understand or respond to anything said in a whingeing voice. Keep very clearly asking her to say it again as you can't understand and she needs to speak slowly and clearly. I still use that tactic if my 8yo whinges!!
When mine were smaller, I also refused to let them yell and scream at or in front of me; I'd put them in another room & walk away until they were ready to talk to me - letting them continue their behaviour, just not 'here'!
Choose your response and stick to it - if your DD is a toddler she will be testing ALl your limits (and I reckon whatever happened as a toddler will haunt me again when they are teenagers so I'd better learn fast!!)
Good Luck!

PixelHerder · 18/08/2009 22:36

I find the whining often accompanies frustration and tiredness. I've now started using the line 'if that toy/activity is making you cry and whine, then I will take it away as you are too tired to play with it. Come and sit down quietly and have a drink of water instead'.

This of course usually prompts a further bout of denial and whining, but if I follow through with it and take toy away or move her away from the activity, it's quite effective, and she's forced to think twice before whinging the next time if she wants to carry on with what she's doing.

It's damned tedious though...
