Not walking at 14Mo.

Would like a bit of a reality check on whether I should be worried about this or not?

my 14MO son is not walking unaided. He is very active, cruising, pushes along his little cart (and can sucessfully negotiate furniture etc), happily walks holding my hand, but won't walk unaided...

My mum has a big problem with it and thinks there is a problem. I feel my son is progressing (albeit a little later than most) and it's not a problem...

Should I worry? and if not now, when?

Thanks, HM.

Friends baby didn't walk, crawl or cruise until she was 2.5. She's now 4 and totally normal.

DS walked at 17 months

no need to worry at this stage ...

DC4 has just started walking at 16.5m, the other 3 DCs all walked before 13m so to me it seems really late but I know that actually its probably nearer average. Its very frustrating when you see other babies the same age up and your DC gets heavier and heavier to carry about but I just tried to think about the money saved on shoes
Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be up and about soon

Lizzylou · 07/08/2009 09:29

DS2 walked at 15.5mths, DS1 was 11mths.

I know which I preferred

Seriously, as all have said, nothing to worry about.

My DD walked at 16mths, TBH it was a relief as when she did finally do it she was very steady and confident - walked straight across the room rather than taking a few steps. THey are also more sensible at this age so it's less stressful. DS on the other hand will be earlier I think

They are all different
DS was 11 months when he started walking
DD was 15 months
Don't worry
And ignore your mum

My daughter didn't walk to 15 months and now competes in athletics competitions around the county--she's ten.

I just think she couldn't be bothered, little madam.

No harm at all in asking your HV for advice, though. That's what they're there for.

back to your mum - i think maybe they were a bit obsessed with physical milestones - my mum was convinced that there was something seriously wrong with me because i couldn't walk till 14 months. when i asked what i was like cognitively or when i started talking though she hadn't got a clue.

i'm always more interesting in the talking and awareness and understanding in my son's development - my reason is that basically you don't see many people around who can't walk without a good reason but there are plenty who still can't string a sentence together or answer a question without saying err? at 20.

pranma · 07/08/2009 14:46

15 months is average many are earlier and many are later my ds was 9 months when he walked[horrendous]my dd was 16 months;later physical development absolutely normal for both.
