10yo DD has her period...and her dance show is on Friday. HELP!?

My 10yo DD has just come on her period this evening (not her first one, but it's only about her third or fourth, so she's not exactly used to it yet).

While I've been sitting looking at MN it's suddenly dawned on me that she's got her dance show on Friday - 2 days time - when she's going to be right in the middle of her period. This is a fairly serious dance class she's in, which means a tight Lycra costume with no pants under. She's been lucky up until now and has not been on for a day she's had a class, even, but this has fallen on the most important event of the year for her dancing and I really don't know what to do.

She seems to me to be far too young for tampons, but then I suppose she will have to use one sometime soon if she's going to carry on dancing next year. And how do you even go about teaching a 10yo to use tampons? IIRC I was about 16/17 when I first used them and so I was a bit more aware of my body iyswim .

I wouldn't even suggest it but I really don't see another option; I know DD would be so embarrassed if she thought people could see her pad through her costume and her teacher would not exactly be thrilled either.

Argggh, fecking periods

FabBakerGirlIsBack - IIRC I got my period at 10 (and that was back in the 1960s) and DD started a few days before her 10th birthday earlier this year - so it's not as if it's a generational thing, just that most of the girls in our family get their periods really fecking early .

If DD had not been comfortable with wearing a tampon I would have gone to her teacher and insisted she let her wear a pad.

Her show went fabulously by the way, and she managed fine with the tampons .

I help to run a swimming group and it is quite normal for 10-yr olds to use tampons! Once they get started they love them.
A little KY Jelly will make it easier to start off with.
Oh, and panty liners are not really necessary either a good alternative is a ball of cotton wool (like for taking off makeup) put between the labia. Just remove it when using the toilet easy!
Hope everything went well at the dance show.

Only a man could think that - surely?!
