Due to a lot of stress over the last week or so, dd (3.5) has started wetting the bed. Problem is I haven't been able to get a matress protector and am wondering if there's a way to clean the matress or if we're going to have to get a new one?

I don't think there is a surefire way to get the wee smell out... I would hang it with the side she wee'd on down, outside or somewhere airy & see if the smell went. If the smell went I'd use it again. (But I am a domestic slob).

I know this is a bit closing the stable door after the horse has bolted... but Boots & John Lewis sell waterproof mattress protectors. I have nonPVC ones I got from Boots & the Healthy House (online) for all the kids' beds, tbh.

Would a drop of tea tree oil or lavender oil help with the smell?

Argos do a whole set too - thought they felt a bit 'plastic' when I put them on DS's bed - but it's not affected his, or his brothers, sleep.

Just found this

don't know if it's any good/help

Get some kylies. Ds1 is weeing on his bed on a daily basis (twice a day - on purpose- the little sod) and the kylies are wonderful- hold 2 litres.

That was a very useful link, Gwenick! Thanks!

sf, although as foolysh says it's bolting the stable door, IME (considerable in this area!) the best waterproofs are La Redoute's. They do flat heavy plastic sheets with a flannelette side and elastic strips on the corners, full single bed size, which wash at up to 90 degrees and tumble dry, over and over again - they're £12-13. (With some plastics they stick to themselves and tear if you tumble them.) After an accident you can chuck the bedding and plastic sheet all in the machine together and they can be dry again by bedtime, but best to get at least 2 for rotation.

Can't link to a page on LR but homepage is here , click on Interieurs then put "mattress covers" in the search box. (They're not all waterproof so check the descriptions.)

could you try one of the febreeze fabric revitalisers ? We used that on the straps of a car seat to get out sick - worked very well after a couple of goes.

i found when my dd wet the bed i washed it straight down with fairy liquid and warm water .it did not smell kids wee doesnt normally smell alot.

the new fabreeze spray gets the smell out after soaking and hanging the bed ur better off with kylies or washable bed sheets to avoid all the hassle tho in my experience you a look at www.attendslifestyles.co.uk in the surface protection bit they do a good range of washable and disposable ones
