DrNortherner - sounds lie the little boy next door to us; he is a couple of weeks younger than my DD (and your DS). ven with him next door DD is still just not that interested. Maybe it is all a biy thing?

Spidermama · 18/07/2009 22:51

My DS went from Like-a-bike to ordinary bike at the age of three completely by-passing the stabilisers age.

Only one of my four had stabilisers and that's cos we inherited the bike. I don't like the things. I think they do more harm than good and it's about time they were abolished.

Roobie · 18/07/2009 23:01

My 4yo ds is still zooming around on his balance bike (he has a 'posh' metal one with brakes that extends significantly so will last for yonks) and I envisage getting him a proper bike for his 5th birthday next April.

I took the stabilisers of my 7yo dd's bike today and she is struggling but doesn't really get much practice in so will probably take a while to master it.

darcireece · 20/07/2009 22:33

ds- 3 but he has adhd so he has no fear & dd is now 3 tried a couple of weeks ago no where near yet

pocketmonster · 20/07/2009 23:21

DD1 mastered it about 2 months ago - she was 4 nearly 5. DSD1 was about 8 because DH made too much of an issue of it so she averse to even trying!

TwoHot · 23/07/2009 09:47

Week before his 4th birthday.
It's not often I get to boast about DS2!
One day He just go the hand of it at toddler group on a plastic balance type bike that he'd never even ridden before. DH reckons it's because he was riding and balancing well on a 2 wheel scooter for ages before that.

4y7m-4y11m for other DC, which is still quite young (we are a cycling mad family).

Trick is to use an extra small bike for them to learn on. When they are confident riding the too-small bike, they can move up to their proper size bike.

peanutbutterkid · 23/07/2009 10:12

hanG of it, even...

usernametaken · 23/07/2009 13:21

Do those that have used balance bikes learn quicker than those who have been through trikes and bikes with stabilisers?
DD was riding her bike with stabilisers on her 2nd birthday but we didn't take the stabilisers off until her 4th b'day...took 2 days to master without the stabilisers. We couldn't have done it earlier as she had a very bad fall and lost all confidence for a year.

Would be very keen to get DS (not quite born yet) a balance bike as they look fab.

Wallace · 23/07/2009 16:18

ds1 - I think he was almost 5
dd - 6 ish

ds2 - 2 years 11 months

Video evidence onyoutube

And still not yet 3 and now riding one-handed

Scarletibis · 23/07/2009 16:38

DD1 6 and a bit - she got the hang of it pretty much straight away but up till then lacked confidence. It was only seeing a younger kid than her having a go down the park that persuaded her (and me!) to give it a go.

UniS · 23/07/2009 17:35

UNT- yes in general, balance bike users do "get it" with pedal bikes pretty fast and with out the need for stabilsers at all.
A child who has been balance bikeing for a while will have mastered steering & balanceing at speed. They believe they can ride a bike, some of them will already be thinking they are bmx riders or stunt riders or racers.
When your child is standing up on the frame of a balance bike as they freewheel down a hill able to control where they go so they turn uphill to slow down... you know they ARE a cyclist and are ready for pedals.

Wallace · 23/07/2009 19:10

yes ds2 does have a balance bike and I think it really does help. He also was given a second-hand bike with stabilisers so I think that gave him good pedalling power

LyraSilvertongue · 23/07/2009 19:27

DS1 - 6
DS2 - 4

piscesmoon · 23/07/2009 19:40

They all take their own time-mine were 5, 3 and 7yrs.

MoominMymbleandMy · 23/07/2009 19:50

My DD was 10. We took the stabilisers off a couple of years ago and she would practice for a bit every now and then and then forget about it. A few months ago she decided she wanted to master cycling and really practised.

I agree they find it easier to learn to balance on a bike that's slightly too small.

blithedance · 23/07/2009 19:59

4, progressing from a balance bike. There was about 2 weeks of stablisers whilst he learned to pedal. DS2 looks likely to follow the same way.

It's all about motivation and opportunity though - DS thinks it's a big treat to cycle to school and that got him practising.

thinkingaboutdrinking · 23/07/2009 20:11

3 - on his birthday 1hr after getting bike! he had a balance bike before and we would have left him on that but it had no brakes and he likes going really fast!
I don't like stabilisers so we didn't use them at all - balance was no problem - the only problem was getting going - for a few weeks we had to push start him but then he was fine.
(one of the few things my DS can do before his peers - yey!!)

Wallace · 23/07/2009 21:31

Did nobody like the videos?

Or was it a far to obvious brag?

Wallace · 23/07/2009 21:31

DD - 5th birthday (had a balance bike for a year before that so never had stabilisers)

DS - 3 years and can use DD's (16") pedal bike, but its really too big for him and hard to control...so he will have to stick to the balance bike until his legs grow a bit and he gets his 16" for Christmas.

Sounds like there is a huge range and it depends a lot on inclination and interest and how much time and space they have to practice...BUT, I am really impressed with how much balance my two have learned from having the Balance Bike, and I am thrilled we skipped the stabilisers stage, as I think DD would have clung to the security of them and been very hesitant to ever have them off as she is naturally quite a cautious child.

leothelioness · 24/07/2009 06:26

My ds1 has just started a couple of months ago and he is 5.5. He was abit worried at first so spent a good week running behind him holding the bike as he really wanted to learn. Bless, he finally got the idea and now he can't wait to go out every day.

Astrophe · 24/07/2009 06:26

Was a very obvious brag Wallace Fair enough though! Its so exciting when they learn new things. I am excited about DDs swimming at the moment and will tell anyone who'll listen how fab she is at backstroke...shes 5 and amazing (I think).

Wallace · 24/07/2009 06:45

Thanks spin

Apostrophe - Your dd sounds amazing at swimming. My dd has just started to learn with no armbands age 8!
