Jigsaws for 2 year olds

Hello

I was just wondering if it was normal for a 28 month old to complete 35 piece jigsaws?

He also has a '4 in a box' type jigsaw with 72 pieces in total all mixed up and I found him today having completed one and most of the way through the second. He won't be 2 1/2 until July.

Is this normal? He was a slow talker (better now) but in all other ways a healthy active boy.

Thanks

Your son sounds very visual-spatial, I bet he ends up being very good at building the hard Lego models when he is a bit older.

My DD was doing 48pc jigsaws independently at 18mths old which the HV told me was quite unusual.

We used ebay a lot, we bought loads of jigsaws on there for DD and then we could just re-sell them when she got bored of them (generally after the first few goes). Wooden jigsaws last much longer than the cardboard ones as well.

The thing with jigsaws is interest level too, some kids have no interest in them at all where as others devour them so it is hard to say what is 'normal' and what isn't, but saying that 35pc jigsaws at 28mths sounds very very good.

My DD burnt her left hand badly when she was 2.3. She is left handed and needed a graft and was heavily bandaged for a few weeks. She suddenly found a fascination with puzzles and went from 2 piece jigsaws to a 100 piece within a few weeks and little piece ones meant for 5 yr old plus. I had to haunt all the charity shops trying to find new ones. This lasted for a few months then she lost interest.

She is 11 now and her teacher says she is "superbly bright". She is very good at Non verbal reasoning/logic problems and is very observant.

umm think totally in the range of normal DD has been completing 4 in the box type jigsaws before she was 2 - has lost interest a bit, but very handy when I had 8 months of morning sickness

My son (also interestingly a late talker) was doing large jigsaws of that size at that age but since then has lost interest...

Thanks for all your help, I was a bit worried as he has showed some obsessive repetitive behaviour in the past which along with not talking had to be addressed with a peadiatrician a few months ago.

Like some of your children perhaps he will lose interest at some point and want to do other things...

i dont think its obsessive, ds could do large jigsaws at that age too. we now have loads of jigsaws, but like bibmother's ds he lost interest after a while. it was a surprise that he took an interest in them again just a couple of weeks ago, he'll be 4 in september. make the most of him playing by himself for a while

DS2 loves the puzzles intended for his older brother and surprised me how good he was at doing them - DS1 never had the patience for them at that age.

Interestingly, DS2 is a late talker; DS1 was talking in basic sentences by his age.

Judging by how well my 2.5 year old does jigsaw puzzles, I would say that is incredibly advanced and clever.
