Here's the situation out having lunch and DS and mum, theres a smell and I notice a poo has fallen out of DS pants and onto floor!
My DS was potty trained very young by my mum (she was main care provider) at around 20 months. He has been excellent, with occassional accidents but no major issues. He is now 3 years 3 months and recently started soiling himself everyday. I just don't know if this is normal? Was reading a scary article in times today here so slightly worried.

I've heard a few people in preschool mention this recently. I think it's not that uncommon but worth checking up on so maybe making an appointment with your GP or giving your HV a call to discuss if it's become fairly frequent.

Does he know he's doing it out of interest? How does he react?

Does there appear to be runny poo as well?

monkeypinkmonkey · 27/05/2009 19:11

He says he doesn't feel it coming, but this has never really been an issue in the past. He is really not bothered when it happens, just wants fresh clothes. He tends to fluctuate between runny and solid.

What did you do?

pramspotter · 27/05/2009 19:17

My son has had this very same thing (sounds like it anyway). The doctor said that it was caused by constipation. The poo he had in the restuarant is called overflow. It is the stool that gets around the semi blockage in the bowel. It does not get processed properly and the child doesn't feel that it is coming. Therefore they are incontinant of this overflow stool but they are still constipated.

The doctor gave my 4 year old lactulose and it sorted him out.

He was 4 when it happened and he had been potty trained for 2 years.

Pramspotter the poo he had in rest was very solid and heavy but previously very runny, so that kind of fits. Fabulousbaker I had to pick it up much to the utter horror of a very trendy couple next to us. They left pretty soon after

What worrys me if it is constipation is his diet, we already have branflakes for breakfast, only eat wholemeal bread. I try to make sure he gets alot of fruit because getting him to sit down to eat dinner let alone the veg on his plate is difficult. So I know he gets lots of fruit and his diet is quite high in fibre, but then read that toddlers shouldn't have too much fibre in diet!!! why is it never simple??

My doc told me that it isn't always down to diet. He thought my son was trying to hold his poos in because he had just started school and didn't want to ask for the toilet. He said that can cause constipation. Best of luck to you guys anyway.

Thanks everynone for your help, went to docs yesterday and she confirmed it was constipation and to monitor it, she really seemed to take me serious which makes me feel less like a ott worrying mum.
