When your child is sleeping...

...do you leave the door open, have a nightlight on, play music, etc?
DS - almost 6 - has the door slightly ajar, a nightlight on, and listens to a CD.
CDs can be stories or music or poems.
What does your kid like?

dd will only sleep if its pitch black. No cds either.

dizzydixies · 26/05/2009 15:48

door open and nightlight on, two sharing, no music etc, once they've had their story thats it

HuffwardlyRudge · 26/05/2009 15:52

No particular preferences. As long as dd has her comfort blanket she will sleep in any bed, light or dark, noisy or quiet. We've never shut the door on her that I can remember, and for preference she likes a little light, but no biggie if not. She's 3.

Ds is 12 months and isn't old enough to have preferences yet.

dark & quiet

6.5yo

ds2 - 15.5 Also dark & quiet

ds1 - 17 (!) Can only sleep with door ajar and landing light on. Warped boy

ohdearwhatamess · 26/05/2009 16:05

Door shut, lights off, no music or stories. 3yo and 15mo.

Our house is very open plan, and noise carries very badly, plus the dcs' room is at the top of the stairs. Mainly keep the door shut to stop our noise disturbing them.

davidla · 26/05/2009 16:05

Ah, yes, I forgot - he also needs Jenny, a smallish leopard (plush toy obviously, not a real one!) that he's slept with since he was a baby.

DD (3) has door closed and cd playing. Not fussed about light/dark etc. Oh but she won't give up her dummy.

DS (17 months) has to be quiet and dark for night sleep. Naps will only be in the buggy with stuff going on around him though.

Flame · 26/05/2009 16:11

shut or ds won't stay in the room and actually fall asleep

wastingmyeducation · 26/05/2009 16:55

DS is one.
I leave our bedroom doors open, but don't have the monitor on once we're upstairs.
I also leave the bathroom light on, so we're not disturbing him turning it on and off and I can see him when he wakes during the night.
DS seemed to fall asleep better when I didn't play the lullaby CD, so nothing like that now and he doesn't have a favourite toy yet.
He is fed to sleep though.

bigchris · 26/05/2009 16:56

doors closed, complete dark

sfxmum · 26/05/2009 17:00

dd is nearly 4 and has always slept with the door open, we are in a flat so plenty of noise and light she drops off after the usual routine of bath and story

it is useful when away from home and we can't really control the environment

bronze · 26/05/2009 17:01

door shut with nightlight

basementbear · 26/05/2009 17:07

Used to have nightlight and a bit of music from mobile thingy, now DS2 (5.5) insists on the landing light being on too with the door slightly ajar, although DS1 (7) who he shares with would prefer not. As soon as they are asleep we switch the landing light off.

doggiesayswoof · 26/05/2009 17:07

DD, 4.10, has:

Nightlight (x 2)

Bedroom door open

About 20 cuddly toys all arranged just so

Drink of water

It's good, as she is used to noise from downstairs, so easier to settle when we are away. But she is genuinely scared of the dark which is a shame.

doggiesayswoof · 26/05/2009 17:09

Oh and we also leave landing light on, in case she gets up to go to the toilet (which she frequently does and is too spooked to turn the lights on in the dark). It's a bugger because our room is therefore not properly dark (door doesn't close fully)
