Does your 2-3 year old make up words?

DD is 2, will be 3 beginning of July.

Over the last week or two, she has started to make up words. it is fascinating! I never thought she would do this, not considered this as part of the developmental stage. (I guess no reason to know it, seeing as I not read about it on MN ).

It is not that she does not know the word - I asked her a second ago what was on the plate of 'tea party' food she had given me and she said 'this is pie, this is sausage, and this is...elowes...celowes, yes celowes (it was lettuce, she knows it is lettuce when not pretending), and you are nanny and I am Sey.win'.

She is doing this all the time when I ask her something. Her imagination has gone WILD and she pretends to be people with both real and made up names. She gives things new and wonderful names and it is just adorable. I can see her thinking about things and practicing new sounds and word lengths.

Is it normal though?!

that sounds daft 'is it normal'! I guess I am surprised she has reached her so quickly. It only seems like yesterday that she was just stringing sentences together and now she speaks with clarity and makes up words (like there are not enough new ones to learn!)

My 4 year old ds1 has been doing this for some time.
Its just normal, I think he thinks I make up all the words I say so he's just joining in!

midnightexpress · 26/05/2009 15:06

Oh yes, I think that's completely normal. DS2 is 2.4 and he announces each morning who he is (usually a character from a book or one of his toys or one of the trains from Chuggington). DS1 is 3.6 and they also love finding a word and shouting it at each other - 'Natalie' was their favourite for a while - they would lie in bed shouting 'Natalie!' and laughing hysterically.

DD tells people DS is her bibling -- a cross between sibling and brother, I guess

And breakfast now is brekchick as she likes eggs

how cute!

yep - we've started a little dictionary for our 2yo's secret language as we thought we'd forget it when she's older, and it is so cute. Dd1 didn't do it, tho - she would imagine scenarios, but not this language thing. Must be to do with how their brains work.

My dd is 6 and still makes up words... Its fun as long as you know what they are talking about!

Gillyan · 27/05/2009 12:00

Yes my DD 3.4 doe sit all the time! She makes herself fall about laughing!

JeffVadar · 27/05/2009 12:39

Yes!

Lun was milk

Lulu was water

Dee Daw was a hug (but only when he was upset)

and Morney was (and still is) his toy Gromit that he takes to bed every night.

It's definitely worth writing them down as it gets harder to remember them all as the years go by!

Cakesandale · 27/05/2009 13:39

Yes here too!

For my daughter a plane was a 'gadjey', and she was called 'Jidgey'. She made up GREAT names for her teddies, too. One is still known as 'Carrotfadger' to this day, as we felt it was to brilliant a name to lose. (It sounds a bit like someone with a gross sexual perversion, tho')

NicNac76 · 27/05/2009 21:58

Really made me smile - totally, totally normal and you should enjoy every second of it. At about the same age my little boy made his own insult up and called us a "Dillet" if we did something he didn't like and we still use it to this day. He also made up a little song called "wanky frog" (I kid you not!) and fortunately to save my blushes, he never sung it outside of the house!!!

sphil · 27/05/2009 22:31

When DS1 was 3 he did this a lot. Some of his best:
loo roll - wee-wee steamroller
nostrils - bogeysholes
marmalade - Lady Marmite

He's nearly 8 now and I often think he's still doing this - then I realise he's talking about Pokemon .

ILoveDolly · 27/05/2009 22:35

my brother had all kinds of words, like 'YiYi' for banana that we actually used even when we were quite old because we all thought it was funny.

DD(3.4) likes to talk in her own language which is normal speaking except all the first consonants the same, very annoying. 'Gummy, give ge a gug' etc

pavlovthecat · 28/05/2009 19:53

its amazing isn't it, that they are learning new words all the time, yet still have the intelligence and capacity to make up their own words! DD looks so pleased with herself when she creates a new word, she is like 'yeah, see i can do it too' .

I don't want to end , want her to stay like this forever. But hey, I have another on the way so in a way it will continue!!!
