13 months not putting weight on legs.

My friend's baby is 13 months old and doesn't put any weight on his legs. Where the other babies in the group are starting to walk/ cruise this baby crawls confidently but when put on his legs cumples to the floor putting no weight on his legs or stiffing them up at all.

Would you be concerned and mention it to the Mum? Or is this normal?

I don't think its anything to worry about at the moment, particularly if the baby is crawling. She could mention it to her hv to see what they say but I would have thought it's too early to worry.

totally normal. My ds didn't start to cruise until 15 mths but as soon as he started to walk there was no stopping him FWIW this is why I avoid "baby groups" with dd - the competitive parenting started to early for my liking - if this baby's mum isn't bothered why should you be?

err no I would be rather worried about a 13mo-old not weight-bearing.

The guidline for this is that babies should be doing it (not cruising) by 6-8 mo. A baby who can't/won't at 13mo may have a hip problem or similar. If it were my DC I would go to doc's/HV for check-up and request physio.

However, you can't really mention it to the mum unless she raises it. Dies she seem concerned?

Well, my dd is 14 months and a bum shuffler. She is showing absolutely no interest in standing at all, if you put her in an position her legs stick out in front of her. I know she'll get there in her own time and I'm not worried at all. It really irks me when other people point out that she's not walking yet. Neither did I at her agae, neither did her sister or her father. If the Mum isn't worried I would say it's none of your business actually.

Normal!

dd1 was also a bum shuffler - never crawled - didn't walk until 16/17mo. I know a lo who walked at 9mo as compared to my dd1. I quite enjoyed my late walker as I had more months of being able to keep her in one place while I had a coffee - she was also older so had teeny bit more sense when she finally did get loose and run around!

My DD would not bear any weight on legs at 13mths.

I took her to GP about it and they said they would only start to be concerned from 18mths onwards.

She is now 16mths and is cruising along furniture but not that confidently yet.

I think it will be at least another month before she starts walking properly.

I?m pleased for those of you with non-weight-bearers who walked by 16 mo or whatever. And yes, bum shufflers are notoriously later walkers. I have known several.

But the guideline is there for a reason. I personally know of two separate children who didn?t bear weight at 1 yr. One had a hip problem and ended up having physio at the children?s hosp ? thankfully he is now 6 and totally fine. He walked in the end at about 2yrs+. The other girl wasn?t walking by 2.5 really, and even now has mobility issues. Maybe early physio would have helped ? alas her mother listened to those who said, oh well, never mind, she?ll walk etc.

Not saying that non-weight-bearing at 12-13 mo is always going to lead to a problem ? but it is a red flag and to say it?s ?totally normal? is rather misleading tbh.

You can see here that it?s listed along with sitting up as a 7mo milestone.

simpson that's v poor from your doctor.

What's the point of saying they should be doing it at 7mo then not worrying until 18 mo???

simpson · 26/05/2009 10:17

Yes I forgot to say when I took DD to docs he did check her hips etc and found there wasn't a problem.
