At what age do toddlers start to recite the Alphabet?

Hi,I have a 2.5 yr old girl who is reciting the Alphabet in order without help.
Does anyone know if this is late, about right, early to do this?
I have an 8 yr old son and just cannot remember milestones.

The equivalent scenario chez otter would be

me: M what does bath start with?
ds: Wa?
me:What sound does bath start with?
ds:Wa?
me: What letter sound does b b bath start with?
ds: Feo did it

Dd1 is 5 and still sings 'ellow mellow pea' instead of 'LMNOP'. However, she can read, so I'm not exactly bothered.

Being able to recite the alphabet is almost completely unrelated to reading ability.

(But it's cute, yes.)

PaulaYatesBiggestFan, I'm intrigued. Your Ds is too thin to swim? how does that work? (serious question, not taking the mick)I've never heard anyone say that before and wondered why? please.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 24/05/2009 23:36

solo i was joking

he is though

6 foot two and almost nine stone!! ewwwwwww

just lovely though and sooooo clever after a very very unremarkable start!

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 24/05/2009 23:38

Ah! I see! I did wonder as my Ds is 10years old(11 in August)and as thin as a bean. He does swim though

DS must be behind then.

he's 3.4 and doesn't know the order, he knows 1-10, and can recognise his name, and also the letters J O M, and says them in context, as in 'thats you mummy and points to the m'

but for me I think it's also important for them to 'know it' rather than memorise it if that makes sence?

Reciting the alphabet (rather than any other set of sounds) is not a milestone like crawling or walking; it depends on whether they've been taught that particular thing.

Ds's CM thought he had language delay because he could not tell her what the goat's baby was called, aged 3. I refrained from pointing out that there aren't all that many goats in our suburb. He could after all tell a male from a female mallard, which I thought was far more relevant to his situation.

cory

ridiculous! I expect ds4 to be a genius and he doesn't know what a human baby is let alone a goats!

lingle · 25/05/2009 17:54

whereas mine is very language-delayed but could recite the alphabet at 3......

lingle · 25/05/2009 17:54

or even 2.0 I meant......

TotalChaos · 25/05/2009 17:59

the southbelle - your child doesn't sound remotely behind. don't worry. like lingle's boy, my DS could recite the Alphabet at 2 or 3, despite behind severely language delayed - it's memorising a system, rather than any sort of communication or literacy milestone.

traceybath · 25/05/2009 18:00

Blimey ds1 is nearly 5 and couldn't do the alphabet song but is reading pretty well.

Its all phonics nowadays isn't it - i've never bothered teaching it to him and he's never been taught it at school.

princessmel · 25/05/2009 18:08

My dd is 4 in Aug and cannot recite the alphabet yet. I am not worried about it. She can recognise a handful of letters and that's it. And only the number 3 as far as I am aware.

peasandbeans · 25/05/2009 18:14

My dd2 has just turned 3 and has been singing it for 6 months or so. She learnt it at nursery. her elder sister (4.6) can nearly sing it having learnt it from her little sister, but doesn't usually get it quite right. That said she knows the letters individually and can write them all. I think it just depends what you teach them.

francagoestohollywood · 25/05/2009 18:16

Have no idea, as it's never occurred to me to teach the alphabet to a toddler.

oodlesofpoodles · 25/05/2009 18:18

I've just asked ds (5.5) if he knows the alphabet song. He said yes but sung it wrong. He got it mostly right but I couldn't say he knows it. I never thought to teach him tbh but he says they used to sing it in nursery. He can read though.
