Dribbling

My DD is 2.8 and has always been a dribbler but at the moment is soaking through clothes at an alarming rate, I think its possibly the worst it has ever been. I'm pretty sure she has got all of her teeth, the back four have just about come through so don't think it's that. She has speech and language therapy but we had to cancel a session so I can't ask her till end of June. Any ideas on what causes it, is it a problem (other than frequent washing!)?

If they breathe through their mouth a lot they will dribble more. Does she have a cold? My ds1 was a dribbler.

She hasn't got a cold exactly but she has been getting all snotty and coughing when we are outside, I realised today she is fine at home so I wonder if it is hayfever.

Perhaps it's that then. They grow out of it eventually!

used2bthin · 22/05/2009 22:05

Thanks I hope so! I am a bit worried that it could be related to her speech difficulties as the SALT mentioned that her jaw muscles are a bit slack but she didn't dribble much for ages and has now started up again so the mouth breathing does make sense.

my ds used to dribble for britain. He has gradually outgrown it. I have heard that using a straw helps them learn to use the right muscles but it may well be hearsay. She should be old enough for you to be able to make her slightly more conscious of it by asking her to swallow her dribble if you know what I mean.

used2bthin · 22/05/2009 22:10

Thanks bodiddly yes that is right about the straw thing, DD has exercises for SALT and that is one of them. Good point about making her conscious of it, I could ask her to remember to keep her mouth closed.

my son does it all the time hes 29months i got some dribble bibs off ebay they are great

bodiddly · 22/05/2009 22:11

I used to remind him every now and then to swallow when I could see he was getting bad.

ilovesprouts · 22/05/2009 22:18

cant tell me to swallow has he does not understand hes gdd and does not talk etc

bodiddly · 22/05/2009 22:22

im sure they will all outgrow it .. I used to feel bad putting ds in bibs all the time especially as he got older but he would soak through them in no time at all!

used2bthin · 22/05/2009 22:27

ilovesprouts dribble bibs sound good, I think I'll search them on ebay. DD has speech/language delay/disorder, all a bit wait and see atm. Does the bib stop them getting a rash? DD gets a bit rashy.

Boden do some really nice towelling hoodies that might help to soak it up as well. I used to put bibs on ds1 but can't remember when I stopped doing that.

used2bthin · 22/05/2009 22:36

I haven't used them on DD since she was one ish and I've just remembered that it was because she used to pull them off and I decided at that stage that washing lots of bibs may not be that different to washing her teeny t shirts (she was quite small for her age then). May be worth trying again although she would possibly take it straight off.

Tie them on!

used2bthin · 22/05/2009 22:47

I tried those ones! They just nearly strangled her as she tried to get them off! Mind you she's older now so may be better. Anyway it doesn't seem to be unusual to be dribbling lots at her age so thats good.
