dribbling 2.4 y/o - is it normal to dribble this much?

DS dribbles far, far more than any of his friends. Soaks through several tops a day and is constantly soaking wet around the chin and all down his chest. He does have a dummy quite a bit of the time (that's a whole other thread!) and I don't think this helps. Is this amount of dribbling normal do you think?

Teething? both my Dc's have dribbled excessively when teething. I took to putting a plastic backed bib on my Ds almost permanently when he was doing it. Dd not quite as bad, but has still got molars to come...

Ds (4yo) only stopped dribbling excessively really a few months ago.

The two important things are whether he
a) has trouble speaking
b) has trouble eating or swallowing.

If no problem with either of those then it's most likely something he'll grow out of - some kids are just big dribblers.

If he does have problems with either of those then you need to get it checked out by gp - just in case it's part of a bigger problem.

bandanas tied around the neck are supposed to be good for catching the dribble - and don't look as bad on a preschooler either.

I second TA. My dd dribbled lots, but also had a lisp and often sat with her tongue sort of poking out. Within 4 weeks of speech therapy, it was almost entirely cured.

There could be other reasons for dribbling, like difficulty breathing through his nose so his mouth is open most of the time, ulcers etc. Have you had a look inside his mouth?

My dd was a terrible dribbler. She was an early talker and I thought that was the cause.

I was also late to get her to drink from a cup without a lid and I believe that could be a contributory factor too.

It's a pain though, isn't it?
