Dd is 15mo today, she kind of says 'mama' and that's it, no animal sounds, no other words nada.

I am trying so hard to be blase about this, but failing miserably, ds could say a whole list of words by now.

So please tell me about your lovely late talkers who now spout non-stop and make me feel all better.

I know exactly how you feel but my lad barely said anything until 5 weeks ago and now he is talking in sentences! I didn't believe it when people told me this but it's true. Don't worry and enjoy!

He is 26 months now. Last night his brother had his teddy 'That's my Teddy, give it to me!'

Are you trying to teach two languages?

My 15 month old DD only really says Mama, Dada, Boo and some other babbles which I understand but others probably wouldn't.

I worry about it too, think it's natural to worry but ultimately we can't force them to speak we can just talk to them loads and encourage it I guess. My DD was a very early with walking, crawling, sitting etc and someone once told me that they tend to either be more physical or vocal early, not both. I'm sticking with that!

DS3 is 27m and only just has the required 50 words that he was "supposed" to have at his 2 year check. He only had 10 then. I have been a bit anxious as his big brothers were quicker than this. We have been referred to the speech therapist and we've had one appointment whisch was very encourging.

In the last week or two he has gained 1 or 2 new words a day so I'm getting less anxious.

Try not to worry about it (easier said than done) but your DD is still very young to be talking!

Mmmm I've heard the physical/vocal thing too, and she did crawl at 5 months.

I swore I would be so chilled out 2nd time around, didn't work though.

don't worry, at this age non-verbal communication is more important (NB though it's fine if they don't point till 18 months) as long as she points by 18 months and has words by 2 I wouldn't start worrying yet. Might be worth trying a bit of baby signing with her.

Latootle · 21/05/2009 19:54

gosh what is all this worry about these babies who are not yet two!!!! they dont really start talking till about 2 1/2 - 3
so please dont fret. Not worth it.

feedthegoat · 21/05/2009 20:02

My ds barely uttered more than a dozen words at 18 months but by 2 people were always shocked to find out his age as his speech was so good. By 3 I'd say his vocabulary was as good as most peoples and you could have an adult style conversation. His playschool have commented how good his speech and vocabulary are so I certainly would't worry about it.
