My usually pretty happy 2 yr old has decided that he doesn't like his high chair any more. Cue lots of kicking and screaming.

Any one elsehad this experience?

to be honest none of mine have been in highchair much past 15mths as sat on booster seat up to the table. Certainly no way I could get my 2.4yr old into a highchair but then I generally cant get her in to a pram either apart from at the min with a broken leg

Time to move him to a normal chair? I don't think many two year olds will tolerate high chairs tbh. I went the ordinary-chair-with-a-few-cushions route, but if I were doing it again would have invested in one of those adjustable wooden jobs which I have seen in other people's houses but don't know the name of.
This was a helpful post, isn't it.

bigchris · 21/05/2009 10:22

yes you need to get a booster chair now
it's not fair to insist he sits in a highchair if he doesn't want to
soon he'll be too big for it anyway

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 21/05/2009 10:22

DD was in a booster seat on ordinary chair from about 15 months - she always hated the high chair.

McDreamy · 21/05/2009 10:23

Def get a booster seat - he wants to seat at the table with you and be a big boy

NigellaTufnel · 21/05/2009 11:20

Thank you! And yes your posts are helpful!

I do not insist that he gets in the high chair. If he doesn't want to get in it, and it's causing him distress I don't force him.

He is sitting at a normal chair at the moment, but it's a bit too low, we have found that cushions are a bit of a liability with his squirming.
But I'm going to use the Handy Sit for lunch, and we are thinking of getting him a Tripp Trapp which should be a bit more stable.

Again, many thanks everyone.

mine moved to ordinary chairs around then. Luckily my chairs are quite high so he managed quite well. You might find a travel booster seat does the job abd more sturdy than a cushion or how about these www.mothercare.com/Kaboost-chair-booster/dp/B0014DCY2E/sr=1-53/qid=1242901559/ref=sr_1_53/279-972064 3-4243457?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=42862041&mcb=core

Hello

My son was the same - went to his grandparents one weekend and sat up with us at the big table and after that there was no way he was going back to the highchair!

I wouldn't even bother with a booster or anything where he needs to be strapped in - he wants to be a big boy now and as long as he is supervised a cushion on a grown up chair will do fine..

lynniep · 27/05/2009 21:17

DS (2.2) has his own table and chair (the cheap wooden one from ikea) and eats there. If we were organised I'd get him a booster seat and we'd all sit around the dining room table. But its piled high with cr*p and we never sit there, so its not an option.

feedthegoat · 27/05/2009 21:24

My ds has a Tripp Trapp and was using it without the baby bar on from about 2. I kept it on as long as I could fearing he'd be out of his chair all the time but he doesn't. I know alot of people don't like them but I'm a big fan and think it will be used for many years. It's really useful in the kitchen too for baking etc.

UniS · 27/05/2009 21:30

mine did that too, so we switched to a higher chair- trip trap like, then he decided he hated that too and wanted to be on a "normal" chair. so he is. has been since about 2.7 . he sits on bum or kneels and gets along OK even tho he is a little low sitting down.

isittooearlyforgin · 27/05/2009 21:45

my ds wouldn't go in a highchair ever so early - think it was because he could see older sister and mum and dad in normal chairs and was adamant that if they were on chairs - why shouldn't he? like lynniep we have ikea chair and table which seems to work well

MrsKitty · 28/05/2009 04:33

Was going to suggest Handy Sitt but see you already have one anyway...If you can't be bothered with all the cushion malarky I noticed IKEA do a couple of "toddler chairs" at the moment - They're like a normal chair, just higher up... and alot less expensive than a Tripp Trapp!
