Hi there. After our recent experience I thought it would be helpful to share it so we may help or prevent others from the suffering we have endured. I had a longish labour of about 18hours with our little girl finally arriving via the ventouse method. She screamed uncontrollably from the outset. She was given calpol to relieve her headache after the birth and we were told she would settle, she didn't. Her head was cone shaped and her eye was bloodshot from the ventouse. I breastfed for 12 days and had to reluctantly give up due to her continual screaming and reluctance to latch on. On advice we changed formulas (4 times),teats and introduced colief, infacol, gripewater etc all with no effect whatsoever. The longest she would sleep at any time would be a couple of hours at most and waketime would just be feed and scream, mainly scream. Colic, windy baby, grumpy baby and many other ideas were suggested but with no real solution. Then after 6weeks a miracle, the health visitor suggested cranial osteopathy. My husband knew the local osteopath from having his back treated previously and he is one of the best in the field. Our first session he explained how the ventouse suction cap had not been correctly fitted on the babies head and had crushed a bone. This leads to misalignment of the skull which can trap a nerve and cause all sorts of problems such as colic, wind, indigestion, ear infections, behavioural problems, the list really is endless. He showed us why the left eyesocket was swollen and how the skull was out of line and explained everything.Pretty scary stuff. After the first treatment she was grisly as expected, for a day or so. Two more treatments and we have a normal baby and the difference is incredible. She now sleeps from 8.00pm until 5am-7am every night with no fuss. She feeds totally calm and only cries when she wants something, feeding, changing, loving etc and only for 5 or 10 minutes not for 5-7 hours!!!. After speaking to other mothers who had ventouse/forcep deliveries and had cranial osteopathy I am amazed at the positive results achieved. We now have a gorgeous little 8 week old girl who smiles and is a joy to be with.

Thank you. After seeing our daughter suffer so much with the pain to how she is now all happy and at peace, is truly amazing. Cranial osteopathy should be in all ante natal classes etc for women who have difficult/ventouse/forcep deliveries. Because it's classed as alternative medicine I don't think it is possible.

Just to say we went to our first session yesterday with my 6.5 week old DD. On arriving as soon as the osteopath took DD without asking any questions she had told me I'd had a difficult labour, followed by emergency CS under general anasthetic (all true) that DD was very cold for a long time after being born and I'd had problems with blood loss levels - also all true. Couldnt believe it, but when she told me I'd lost my mum so DD was feeling the stress from that I nearly passed out. DD suffers from severe reflux which was the reason we went. Still very sicky today but doesnt seem in as much pain...will see how we do after the next couple of sessions. Is all this normal for Cranial osteopathy?!

Hi aoifesmama, I am certainly no expert on cranial osteopathy but having spoke to other mothers who have experienced it like ourselves I can only sing its praises. After the initial treatment I think it is common for the baby to be a bit grisly and we gave ours 2.5ml of calpol as recommended by the health visitor which helped. The colic, wind, constant screaming and pain she was suffering are now gone thankfully and are consigned to the memory bin.
