21 Month old and speach

Probably been done a million times before but just wondering if this is within the ranges of 'normal'.

DS is 21 months old and is very chatty and babbles a lot. He has a few very clear words like:

mummy
dadda
more
no
juice
bye bye

He can also make animal sounds when I ask him what a cow does he says 'moo', sheep 'baaa' dog 'oof oof' etc.

He also has maybe 30 more words that are very unclear but we know what he means but his pronunciation seems very slurred and almost impossible for anyone else but me and dh to understand. For example he'll say car with a d so he says 'dar'. He does this a lot and says 'duddle' instead of cuddle, 'diss' instead of kiss. I realise he is still young and this is probably quite normal but other things concern me.

When he wants something or wants to tell you something he just says 'dat' 'dat' 'dat' over and over and over and cries if you don't respond within seconds. He seems to be wuite frutrated with language so i have introdiced simple sign language since about 9 months which sometimes help but often not.

He seems to make the same repetative sounds over and over and over again. I have noticed even when he's playing he's very vocal and just chatters the same few syllables over and over until I say something and acknowledge it even though he's not actually making any words (to me at least!)

I can't quite explain what I mean so it might sound a bit rambled! My firend's little boy is the same age and he seems to make noises but not repeat the same ones over and over iyswim?

My ds does make eye contact and pointed at about 9 months so I am not hugely concerned with his comunication skills but his language does worry me a bit. People we know can always tell when we are in a shop or something cos they all comment on how all they heard was ds saying 'dat dat dat' over and over!

Is this noral. He has a bigpersonality and is actually quite a chatter box. He has a big vocal range, ie screetches and 'sings' but he does seem to speak monotone when he's making these sounds if that makes sense.

Any ideas?

Something else he seems to do is put more syllables in a word then needed so his favourite book called Rainbow Rob he calls 'Rararararabow rob'!. Bin Lorries he calls 'babababaom lorry'. Up is 'upupupupupup'. He can say 'bubble' and 'bath' but when he puts the two words together to say bubble bath it becomes 'babababababbuble baff'.

He also says hello with the intonation that I use when I say hello to him but it just sounds like 'eeeewoooo'.

He also puts s' in front of a lot of words like yes is 'ses' etc. Maybe I'm worrying for no reason but a lot of kids his age seem to be speaking in sentences and my ds' speach still seems like babbles.

Sounds normal.

littleboyblue · 17/05/2009 08:18

Sounds absolutely fine. My ds1 is 21 months and is similar.
Dod Dilder = Bob the Builder
orf = off
caaa= cat
der-der = daddy
der-der = mummy
bar = bear/bath

flamingobingo · 17/05/2009 08:18

x-post

You need to calm down and enjoy him. Stop comparing him with other children.

He's completely normal - all children do things at different ages and it's completely irrelevant when they do it because they all get there in the end unless there's something stopping them.

By age 2, they say a child needs to have about 50 words - much less than that and they'd start worrying. I bet if you wrote down all your son's words (and ignore the pronunciation - pronunciation will be crap for quite some time yet, and you'll be the only person who can translate (unless there's someone else who's with him as much as/more than you)), you'd find he had way more than 50 already.

flamingobingo · 17/05/2009 08:18

My 2.5yo spends ages walking round saying 'wowerdoff digdig' for flowertots knickers - I'm the only one who understands most of what she says

littleboyblue · 17/05/2009 08:20

FWIW, my dad knows a little boy who is 2 weeks younger than ds1 and he has full blown conversations! It's mad, but they really do all do it at different stages.

loler · 17/05/2009 08:26

My ds2 is also 21 months and yours says more than him. DS1 was very slow to speak (now 4 and never shuts up!) so I was thinking that ds2 was quite forward with his speach!

My dd was extremely forward with her speach and was talking in long sentences very early - I can remember bringing ds1 home and she was just 21 months her first words to him were "his hair is dirty put his hat back on". DS2 (if he even notices something other than cars) would just point at something dirty and say "errrreerr".

Every child is different and try not to compare yours with anyone elses. Or if you do only compare the things he's good at - running, climbing, creating chaos.

loler · 17/05/2009 08:30

littleboy - My ds2 also calls me daddy - gets very strange looks from people when we're out and about!

littleboyblue · 17/05/2009 08:32

loler Weird isn't it? He has never said mama or anything. Maybe he thinks all grown ups are called 'dadda'.

Sycamoretree · 17/05/2009 08:42

Very normal. DS 20th months and had similar:

Mama
Dada
nana
Dog Dog
Car
Ball
Juice
Cup Cake
neenar [fire engine]
Downstairs
Paints (just heard him do this while typing - a new one! Pulled DD's mini paint pallet out of her crayons box...tired to eat it).

then a few phrases like:

There is is!
All gone.
Oh no!

He babbles constantly in a way that no seems clear to me he actually has a much broader vocab than I can currently understand. SO, I am trying just to go with the flow.

Hard, as his elder sister was simply light years ahead of him and life just felt so much easier being able to fully communicate by this age.

Bless them, they all sound very similar, and adorable.

TheLadyEvenstar · 17/05/2009 08:51

DS1 was having full blown conversations at this age and younger however DS2 who is 20m says
rara- karl
mamma
daddy
a bit
more
up
ned - bed
ea - tea
root- foot (pronounced the same but r instead of F)
night night
car
woo woof - everytime we see a dog, horse, pidgeon, cat, sheep, cow or any animal lol
My book
mine,
no
bewwy- belly
air-hair
earssssssss
rai roo / rower - shower rai roo is raning room which is what i call the shower stems from my childhood lol
ball
nin nin - dinner
dink- juice
wiwwy - yep you guessed it willy
and my least fav which i am unsure where he learnt it....
s*

I worry about him often as ds1 was such a talker but the lovely ladies on here have taught me to stop comparing them and just enjoy him which i am doing.

savageisfat · 17/05/2009 09:03

Good poin about the not comparing thing I know I should't but it is hard!

He's lovely, a beautiful little boy, I suppose my concerns about him stem from when he was a rather...errrm challenging baby! I suppose I'm just accutely aware of any tiny niggles that may have caused his behaviour for the first 12 months if that makes sense??!

He already has about 60 words that I can think of just now so I suppose he's doing fine. Some of his words are really clear ike when he lifts something heavy he says 'heavy', he says 'help' when he needs help 'oof you' for love you, 'open' and 'closed' so I hope he's getting there. I think it was just the lack of putting words together and the 'dat dat dats' that bothered me!

Thank you

Savage, DS1 was challenging and still is at 10yrs old lol. DS2 on the other hand was a dream baby and a dream toddler...if only he would stop teelling me NO and then running away when i try to dress him....why oh why did nobody remind me what they were like???

HumphreyCobbler · 17/05/2009 09:30

At that age ds was saying dacter (tractor). That was it, not even mummy or daddy.

He is two and a half now and chatters away.

He adds more syllables when he really likes something so Postman Pat becomes popopopopopmanpat.

savageisfat · 17/05/2009 20:11

Thanks everyone again. Lol ladyevenstar, ds does the no and screaching thing when I dress him too! I just have to grit my teeth and remember I'm the adult!

HumphreyCobbler, interesting point about your ds adding syllables when he really likes something! It seems to be the same with my ds. He loves bins and bin lorries and he kind of gets over excited and just can't seem to say it properly!

I was chatting with him earlier though and although he always seems to have had a good understanding of what we say to him, it seems to be that just since writing this thread this morning his vocabulary and pronounciation is improving.

He has a Thomas Tank toy for the bath and normally he calls him 'Tissus' but tonight he looked at it and shouted 'Thomas!' He also said the dog's name really clearly today. Maybe I was worrying for nothing. I hope so anyway, I think I just need to relax and enjoy him cos he's amazing now. Still a bugger at times but nothing like he used to be as a baby!

Thanks for the reassurance everyone!
