Potty training when we only have 2 clear days back to back at home.....?!?!?!

DD is definitely ready but has a max of 2 days back to back before going of to nursery for either 1 day or 2 days. We were going to go for it this next bank holiday weekend but completely forgot and booked a last minute holiday away for all of us .

Have we really messed up?

Book her into nursery for one full week and let them do it! I'm not kidding - we did this with DD (told nursery why and she was in the toddler room where about 15 were all in training). Had it cracked within three days and it was fab.

nursery now offer it as a 'service'!

ds1 went to nursery on day 2 of potty training, they just carried on as i said i was doing!
expect a few more accidents (send lots of pants!) but they will be more than happy to do it i expect

notnowbernard · 15/05/2009 21:50

If she is "definitely ready" she'll get it wherever she is and whatever she's doing (with maybe the normal amount of accidents you'd expect at the start of PT)

gothicmama · 15/05/2009 21:50

intensive no going out pants and potty needed keep asking her when you are away follow same routine as at home

BiscuitStuffer · 15/05/2009 21:51

....and do i still put a nappy on for day time nap and bed time?

I would stick a nappy on for naps

And def for bed

BiscuitStuffer · 15/05/2009 21:53

oooh lots of replies when I wasn't looking. thank you.

Mmm - nursery definitely doesn't have all week availability but I like your thinking!

Ok - so I could have her for 2 days and nursery for 1 and then me for 2 again (and then nursery for 2 days) and that would be enough do you think?

So do you stop the nap and bed nappies when those ones are dry post sleep?

It's what I'm doing

Though there is varying opinion on how to manage night-nappy stuff

Atm I suspect dd2 will be dry at night before dd1... but hey, they're asleep, does it really matter?

Ds2 (2.4) is 3 weeks into PT and I didn;t have any days at home. I just carried on with my usual routine and made sure I knew where the nearest loo was and asked him fairly frequently if he wanted a wee.

I've got 2 older dcs so we had to do the school & preschool drop off/pick up (25 minute round trip in pushchair) every morning and afternoon, I took him to Sainsbury's to do the weekly shop on the first day (had NO food in), we had to take the dog for an hour's walk every afternoon and it was fine.

He was ready to train, he asked to do it which I think made the whole process a lot easier. I don't think it's always necessary to cease normal life for a week in order to potty train.

2 days in the house should be more than enough if she's ready and nursery will have masses of experience in newly training toddlers so it's probably easier for her to be there than at home - save your carpet .

Same as olihan, really - I did use pull-ups out and about for a few days, but she just got it quickly. I'd have gone mad with the staying in thing.

BiscuitStuffer · 15/05/2009 22:27

Yes I don't get the sating in thing either. I can appreciate why she would need a parent watching her like a hawk for the first 2-3 days but why it matters if you're walking down the road or not I don't know. I would rather save my sofas!

If you do go out and about in pants in the early days a word of advice:

Trousers

Skirts = big puddles on the floor because knickers absorb nothing.

Trousers absorb most of the wee before it hits the floor .

Washable shoes are also a Good Idea!

Ds2 doesn't have a nappy on for naps but still does over night, although he's usually dry in the morning. He's a bad sleeper at the best of times so I'm not giving him any more reasons to wake up in the early hours.
